SUCCESSFUL CRICKET DANCE. LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN TROOP. There was a large attendance at the Manaia Cricket Club’s dance in the town hall on Friday, visitors being present from various parts of the province. The stage was artistically decorated with japonica, palm leaves and spring flowers. Chinese lanterns were suspended. Mrs. J. Christie was in charge of this work. The supper tables, which were prettily decorated with spring flowers, were arranged by Mrs. J. Cudby. The dance music was played by Hooker’s Merrymakers’ Orchestra, with extras by Miss J. Baker and Messrs. M. Whalen and S. Gordon. Messrs. M. Walker, H. Hansen, C. Whalen and T. Hickey were masters of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo fox-trot was won by Miss P. Hickey and partner, and a Monte Carlo waltz by Mr. J. Stewart and partner. The winner of a competition was Mr. H. Hansen. The committee in charge of the ar? rangements comprised Messrs. C. Whalen, M. Walter, J. Barnes, H. Hansen and T. Hiclrey. Messrs. P. Merrie and J. Christie were joint secretaries. Supper was served by the women’s committee consisting of Mesdames J. Young, V. H, Hobday, C. Whalen, A. Merrie, N. Davis. G. Calder, J. Mouat and J. Barlow. Members of the Stratford, Eltham, Hawera and Kaponga troops of the Legion of Frontiersmen were on parade at the Manaia town hall on Thursday evening, when a meeting was held with the object of fdnning a Legion troop at Manaia. The convener of the meeting, Mr. V. F. Winter, welcomed Major Fmdlater, New Zealand commandant, and members of the visiting troops. Major Findlater gave a comprehensive and interesting talk on the world as a whole and the work of the Legion. Several questions were asked by intending members of the Manaia troop and were answered by the commandant. Ten names have been forwarded as members of the Manaia troop, including some returned soldiers, and a meeting will be called before it is definitely decided to form a troop at Manaia. An enjoyable social and dance was conducted by Manaia High School old pupils in tire Oddfellows’ Hall on Thurs-

day evening. There was a good attendance and an enjoyable time was spent in dancing to the music played by Mr. M. Whalen, with extras by Miss M. Silby. A spot waltz was won by ,Mr. F. Andrews and Miss E. Ward and a Monte Carlo waltz by Mr. G. Innes and partner. The secretarial duties were m the hands of Mr. P. Blair. Mr. Blair was master of ceremonies.

The monthly meeting of the Manaia Scout Committee was held on Thursday evening. Those present were Mr. E. M. Marshall (chairman), the Rev. R. Miller, Messrs. L. A. Walters, J. Browning, J. Allen, Group Scoutmaster H. Cottom, Assistant-Scoutmaster G. Innes, Cubmaster (D. Hayter, Mesdanies H. Cottom, A. J. Clare, B. Paul and J. Christie. A letter was received from the Manaia Town Board granting the use of the playing area at the domain for the annual competitions. Group Scoutmaster Cottom reported that the scout parades had been well attended. Several Maori scouts had been absent from several parades owing to the restrictions but were now attending agaip. Competition work was divided into three sections, Group Scoutmaster Cottom taking one section, Scoutmaster Marshall the second and Assistant Scoutmaster Innes the third. Three patrols would be taking part in the competitions. Cubmaster Hayter reported that the roll number was now 25. The weekly parades had been well attended. Competition work had been carried out and three sixers would be entered for the competitions. The visiting committee reported that a visit was made to the cubs when 19 cubs were on parade and were engaged in signalling, first-aid and games. The conduct and work of the cubs was good. Assistant Cubniaster Davis should be a great Help as he had been through . the cub pack. Later the scouts were visited, 19 being on parade. ComP e titi° n work was being carried out and the scouts were keen on their work. The comihittee was congratulated on having such competent officers. Dr. C. R. Davies and Mr. J. Allen were appointed a visiting committee for the next month. Mr. Miller reported that he had conveyed the “thanks” badge to Mr. A. G. Bennett, who was delighted to receive it The annual competitions for scouts and cubs to be held this year at Manaia were discussed lengthily. Mr. Miller was appointed marshal for the scouts and Mr. Browning the cubs. The grounds and catering committees will report to a special meeting. The Manaia school A cricket team travelled to Matapu on Friday and beat the home team by 5 runs in the first match of the season in the South Taranaki primary schools’ competition. For Manaia Daymond 13 and Austin 9 were the principal scorers in the total of 23

runs. In the second innings scored 23 runs for the Jogs of four wjckr ets (C. Hawe 11). Matapu in the first innings could score only 7 runs against the bowling of Hawe and JJosie. In the second innings they did much better, scoring 34 runs. Prestige 10, Cleaver 6 and Hogan 5 were the principal scorers. C. Hawe secured three wicket? for Ma* naia. Constable J- Scannell and Mrs. Scannell and family Have left for Tolaga Bay. Constable Warren, Levin, who has sue* ceeded Constable Scannell, has taken up his duties at Manaia. Mr. G.
