It is not rare to find two or more people from New York or London in the same motion picture cast When you find two from Christchurch, New Zealand, that is something. May Beatty was bom in her father’s own theatre in that New Zealand community, and Colin Tapley went to Christ’s College and became a Rugby star there. It was old home week when the pair met in the “Becky Sharp” set, where R.K.O. Radio’s technicolour picture was in production. Another from “’way down under” who is supporting Miriam Hopkins, blonde star of “Becky Sharp,” is Charles Coleman, from Australia. # # # o
After a year at London Benita Hume has returned to Hollywood and has been given a leading part in “The Gay Deception,” a Fox Film production starring Francis Lederer. # * ft *
Basil Rathbone, who previously divided his time between the London and Broadway stages, has been engaged by Columbia for a prominent part in “A Feather in Her Hat,” starring Ruth Chatterton.
It is reported that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have offered Myrna Loy an increased salary of £5OO a week to smooth over a slight difference of opinion with her. Myrna, whose contract still has three years to run, was getting £3OO, and maintained that she was worth twice that. ft ft ft ft
Benjamin Gigli, the celebrated tenor, is to make a film in Berlin called “Do Not Forget Me.”
ft ft ft The latest addition to the ranks/ of screen-opera is Igor Gorin, a Russian baritone who has arrived at Culver City to sing for M.G.M.
Sir Guy Standing made such a success in “Lives of a Bengal Lancer” that he is. to play in another military picture. The title will be “Annapolis Farewell.”
Paramount is preparing a special fivereel picture out of the material its cameramen photographed on Admiral Byrd’s recent Antarctic expedition.
The Cuban- Government has seized a copy of Fox’s “Grand Canary,” following a protest from the Spanish Government that the fihn represents the Canary Islands as being unhealthy.
Wallace Beery is interested in a story written round the life of John L. Sullivan, famous prize-fighter of the ’nineties, and may play the part. The story is entitled “The Greatest Roman of Them All.”

The title of Charles Chaplin’s new film, which has been in production more than a year, and which, so far, has been referred to as “Production No. 5,” was announced recently. It is “Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times.’-’ Never before has a player’s name been included in the title of a film, and this ' js the first occasion on which Chaplin has officially identified himself with the chief character of his story.
Lily Pons, the Metropolitan Opera Company star, has arrived at Hollywood and is at work on her first picture, Its tentative title is “Love Song.” Jerome Kern has been engaged to write the musical score. # # o * Miss Grace Moore, who is under contract to Columbia, made three appearances at Covent Garden when on holiday in England during the jubilee celebrations. Her first appearance in the role of Mimi in “La Boheme” was enthusiastically received, the London police forbidding theatre queues more than 15 hours ahead of the performance. With her husband, Valentine Parera, Miss Moore toured part of southern Italy by motor-car and spent several weeks at her home at Cannes. # '* * <e Anthonv Asquith has been selected to direct “Elizabeth of England.” A fine cast is being lined up for the numerous characters who play important parts in this rich historical passage. The part of Queen Elizabeth herself will be played by Miss Flora Robson. # # * . * Three kangaroos Walt Disney recently received as a gif* from an Australian admirer are co-starred with Mickey Mouse in his latest film Mickey s Kangaroo.” In this carfoon Walt Disney presents another novel idea. .
