TRIED TO JUMP ON FERRY
MAN FALLS INTO WATER MISHAP IN AUCKLAND HARBOUR. ADVENTURES OF HIS RESCUER. ROPE ON LIFE BUOY GIVES WAY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The smart rescue of a young man who fell into the harbour semi-conscious after an unsuccessful attempt to jump from the wharf on to a ferry steamer bound for Devonport was made to-ffight by Mr. M. McGregor, Parnell. Mr. McGregor dived from the stern of the moving ferry to the assistance of the other man who apparently struck his head in his fall and was floating face down near the wharf. Both men were eventually hauled from the water. “1 was sitting near the stem of the ferry near the lower deck and the boat had just left the wharf when a young man who was running jumped for the boat,” Mr. McGregor said later. “He missed and apparently hit his head on part of the ferry and fell into the water, but did not sink, his heavy overcoat keeping him on the surface. I took off my overcoat and dived in after him.” „ The man was not far from the wharf and by the time Mr. McGregor had reached him a lifebuoy had been thrown from the wharf. Mr. McGregor placed the other man in the buoy so that he could not fall out and kept himself afloat while those on the wharf, including members of the Auckland Harbour Board staff and a naval petty officer, hauled the first man to safety. “After they had got him up to the wharf they threw the buoy back to me," Mr. McGregor said. “I was hauled up and was almost to the top when the rope broke and back I went into the harbour. A second attempt was successful.”
