BOXING CONTEST AT SYDNEY. By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright. Sydney, Sept. 12. At the Leichhardt Stadium Ron Richards (11.8), a coloured Queenslander, outpointed Leo Kelly (12.4), an American negro, in a 15-rounds bout.
CENTRAL TEAM WINS SCHNEIDER FIFTEEN BEATEN. MORE COMBINATION IN BACKS. In a game marked by frequent back and forward rushes, but marred by a general lack of combination and too many mistakes, the Central Division junior representative team beat the Schneider Shield (Inglewood) team by 17 points (five tries, one converted) to six (two tries) in the curtain-raiser at Stratford yesterday. There was more dash in the Central backs and the forwards had better' control of the ball, the Schneider Shield team not backing up very well. For the Central team the Midhirst inside back combination gave the backs a good start and Standring was a reliable centre. Richardson was the best of the wingers and Ludlam was good at fullback. Ladbrook and Rumball were the strength of the Schneider team, O Byrne, while always in position on defence, .being rather unreliable. The Schneider team’s tackling was weak. The forwards were evenly matched, the Central team’s scrumming showing evidence of more practice together. Loose rushes, too, had more devil in them. Charlton, Jones, Bonner, Vivian and Thompson were the best forwards for the winning team, while Bradley and Burgess were the best of the losing pack. The teams were:— Central Division: Ludlam (Midhirst); Wellington (Stratford), Standring (Toko), Wilmshurst (Old Boys); Jakes (Midhirst), Cookson (Midhirst): Harkness (Midhirst); P. Jones (Toko); Richardson (Old Boys), Vivian (Stratford), Charlton (Stratford), Bonner (Stratford); Chapman (Toko), Thompson (Stratford), Wellington (Midhirst). Schneider Shield: Crouch (Purangi); Gyde (Durham), J. O’Byme (Egmont Village), iarnett (Kaimata); L. Rumball (Ratapiko), L. Fombroski (Norfolk); Ladbrook (Durham, capt.); Dodunski (Egmont Village); Mumby ' (Purangi), Reeve (Norfolk), Bradley (Durham), Burgess (Norfolk); Brown (Norfolk), Paterson (Egmont Village), Klenner (Kaimata). The first ten minutes saw the Central backs consistently attacking as the result of constant hooking, with an occasional Schneider forward rush when the passing broke down. Wilmshurst was injured by a tackle and had to retire, Richardson going to the wing and Gibson C lidhirst) going into the scrum. Rumball made an attempt to goal from a penalty, but the kick was wide. The forwards took charge until Richardson made a run up the wing that he spoiled with a wild pass. Infringements and hard foi-ward work brought the Schneider team close to the Central line. Then Gibson and Bonner headed a dribbling rush that beat Crouch, -nd Bonner picked the ball up neatly near the line to score a good try. Ludlam ’ failed to convert.
The Schneider forwards were great triers and, profiting by Central backs mistakes, Bradley and Burgess bullocked their way close to the opposition line, where Burgess picked the ball up to score. Rumball missed with the kick. Central retaliated, Richardson weaving his way through to give the ball to Bonner, Vivian and Charlton, who scored. Ludlam missed with an easy kick.
Central opened the second half with a splendid try. The ball came out quickly from a scrum at half-way. All the backs handled neatly to Standring, who cut through and sent out a long pass to Wellington. The winger ran hard and drew all the available defence before centring to a charging pack of forwards. Bonner took the ball excellently and scored without opposition. Jones converted. The Schneider team took a turn and a loose rush charged down on the Centtal line, where Ladbrook tackled a defender for Rumball to score. The same player missed the conversion. Another try followed to the Central team, Jones dribbling down and picking up to fall over the line for a try that was not converted. The remainder of the game was very open, both teams making sweeping attacks that just failed. Central finally succeeded, Vivian scoring. Cookson missed with a penalty kick and the game ended with the score:— Central 17 Schneider 6 Mt. C. Pellowe refereed.
