DEATH OF MRS. G. PEARCE

WITNESSED WRECK OF ORPHEUS. The death occurred at Auckland on Sunday of Mrs. Emily Sarah Pearce, wife of Mr. George Pearep, Rautangi Road, Mount Eden. Born in Tasmania in 1859, Mrs. Pearce shortly afterwards moved to Melbourne, and at the age of five went to Russell with her parents. Her father, the late Captain Thomas Wing, who had been making extensive surveys of manyNew Zealand harbours, was then in command of a vessel trading to Mauritius, and his wife was left very much alone to the bringing up of her family amid the -stirring times of early New Zealand .colonisation. Captain Wing was appointed harbourmaster at Manukau Heads in 1858, and during the Maori War the family passed through trying experiences, a guard of 10 Imperial soldiers giving protection for some months. In spite of this, the flagstaff at Manukau Heads was cut down and. the lifeboat destroyed by the Maoris In 1863 the family witnessed the wreck of H.M.S. Orpheus at Manukau Heads, when 181 lives were lost. Mrs. Pearce often gave graphic descriptions of the wreck. In 1874 she married Mr. R. M. Wallis, fourth son of the late Rev. James Wallis, who arrived in New Zealand as a Methodist missionary in 1834. They liv%d at Auckland, where they attended the Grafton Road Church for 46 years. Mr. Wallis died in 1920. Some years later his widow married Mr. George Pearce, Taranaki, who survives her. Mrs. Pearce was always deeply interested in social and temperance work. She leaves three sons and two daughters. Captain Alan ' Wallis, of the steamer Rona, is a son.

Mrs. Pugh and Miss H. Pugh have returned from a visit to Mrs. Pughs daughter, Mrs. Potter, Kakaramea. Members of the Anglican Church held a dance on Friday night, there being a large attendance. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss D. Bradshaw and Mr. B. Russ. Among those present were Mesdames H. C. Johnson, Irving, Anstis, Erickson and Boyce, Misses D. Bradshaw, J. Mark, Spearman, M. Batten, I. McDermott, B. Tunbridge, M. McGillivray, Reader (2), Irving, D. Cannon, E. Gander, N. Annis, P. Crowe, J. Burton, J. Kelly and E. Boyce. HAWERA Miss G. Rawcliffe, who will leave Hawera to-morrow on transfer to Auckland, was met by the members of the Hawera staff of Hallenstein Bros, yesterday and received a presentation. The manager, Mr. H. Baker, congratulated Miss Rawcliffe on her promotion and wished her future happiness and prosperity. To celebrate the coming-of-age of their daughter Margaret, Mr, and Mrs. C. Lamb entertained friends at their home on Monday night. The time wag spent in dancing and games. Mr. Yearbury proposed the toast of Miss, Lamb. Mr. Lamb replied and presented his daughter with a key. The guests included Mesdames W. Hill (New Plymouth), A. Smith and E. Yearbury, and Misses M, Smith, J. McFarland (Wellington), P. Yearbury, B. Smith, J. Manners, B. Yearbury, M. Hill (New Plymouth), T. Young, .E. Matheson, M. Glass and L. Smith. Mrs. R. D. Douglass and Miss Fiona Douglass, Mangatoki, left for Wellington on Saturday on holiday. NORMANBY Miss M. O’Connor, who has been the guest of Mrs. V. F. Howell, Whenuku Road, returned to Levin on Saturday. Miss A. Payne,. who has been on a holiday visit to Auckland, returned this week. Miss A. Hall, who has been Mrs. Linn’s guest, has returned to her home at Patea. Miss P. Conaglen, who has been staying with Miss A. Duggan, Austin Road, has returned to Pihama. Miss Shanks has returned after spending the holidays in the South Island. Mrs. Meuli entertained several of the members of the Normanby Women’s In? stitute committee at tea on Tuesday afternoon. Those present were Miss Free (president), Mesdames W. G. Gane, W. Bennett, V. F. Howell, A. Knuckey, E. J. Linn, C. L. Hay, L. Phillips and Miss V. Allan. Basketball Club’s, Dance. The Normanby basketball club held a. successful and enjoyable dance in the town ball on Monday evening and as a result the funds will benefit considerably. The decorations made an attractive setting. Green and gold streamers hung from the ceiling, the walls were draped with trails of greenery and the stage looked effective decorated with greenery and vivid red camellias. Henry’s Valencia band played the music and Mr. K. Tippett was master of ceremonies. Extras were played by Mrs. Gower. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr. and Mrs. Carlson, Mangatoki, and the prizes for a novelty waltz went to Miss Tippett and Mr. L. Schicker. Supper was served by the committee augmented by Mesdames D. Stewart, senr. and junr., J. Archbold, Pickering and Tippett. Those present included Mesdames Hopcroft, B. Carlson (black georgette), Gower (black velvet), Misses G. Chadwick (pink velvet), M. Hopcroft (floral organdi), D. Hurley (pink velvet), C. Stewart (orange taffetas), Edna Flintoff (pink satin), G. Stewart (flame satin), Ethel Flintoff (blue satin), I. Schicker (cherry georgette), M. Schicker (blue crinkle organdi), M. Pickering (blue and pink evening tunic), P. Hickey (shell pink georgette), S. Tippett (blue velvet), M. Forsters (red taffetas), Turner (green taffetas), Tubley (black velvet), M. Michalick (gold satin), A. Rowe (red satin), P. Coleman (blue velvet), E. Moore (black velvet), G. Behl (wine velvet), I. White (black lace), H. Behl (blue velvet), N. Loader (wine windswept satin), D. Slinger (floral frock), I. Preston (lime green chiffon), J. Carlson (orange windswept satin), I. Carlson (pink embossed taffetas), D. Hopcroft (blue frock), M. McMillan (black velvet) and M. McMillan (blue satin).
