MANY VISITING HORSES

FINE FIELDS ENGAGED PROSPECTS OF GOOD RACING. STRONG TARANAKI TEAMS. (By “Hurry On.’’) With the exception of the Marangai Handicap splendid fields figure in all events at Wanganui to-day. The hack the fields being the best for some years, events have filled exceptionally well, and Taranaki stables are as usual strongly represented and a good share of the prize monies should come their way. The totalisator will operate on the old 75-25 one nool basis. Proceedings open at 12.30 with the MAIDEN RACE. Of £BO. Six furlongs.

This is an exceptionally strong field •and-a good jump out from the barrier will be necessary. Marton form points •to a good ■ performance by Going Gay, who should have been improved by her •race on Saturday.. .Mesurina and Prevail also ran fair races at Marton. Of the newcomers the Curie three-year-old Entail, who has been galloping in great style at Wanganui, is expected ,to run prominently. Supreme Court, Happy Landing and Hunting Scene have minor placings to their credit, while the Waikato pair Flit Acre and Callisto both have private reputations ■ for. • speed. Speculation will take a wide range with good support for . . . .• GOING GAY. ENTAIL. SUPREME COURT. \ 1.10OKEHU HURDLES HANDICAP. 'Of £llO. One mile 4J furlongs.

On his Trentham showings Esteem would be entitled to plenty of respect. His subsequent failure at Riccarton was not his true form. Two races at New Plymouth sharpened Ruaform and he has been working well a’. Hawera. Gold Cure’s form on the flat at the combined hunts’ meeting was good enough to draw attention to h.’ ■ prospects here. Soloist should also have benefited from his race a* New Plymouth. Kaola, who is expected to run his usual solid, consistent race, should hold Lady Wessex and Bay Sand safely. The popular choices may Den RUAFORM. ■ ESTEEM. KAOLA. 1.55PUTIKI HACK HANDICAP. Of £lOO. One mile and 110

Rust’s recent track ’"ork has been so impressive that despite her weight she will carry heavy support. Silver Brier, from Te Rapa, who made her opponents appear very cheap at the Pahuranga Hunt meeting, has gone the right way since then. Tahurangi and Sporting Song, two winners at New Plymouth, worked well on Tuesday. Ingenuity is always a possibility, and Marton fo-.n emphasised the hope for Gay Boy, who : s definitely an improved horse. Trackman was a shade unlucky at Marton and may do better at Wanganui. Blue Tiger and Whetuma are possibilities. Backers have not an easy task here but the favourites may be GAY BOY. SILVER BRIER. TAHURANGI. 2,34 MARANGAI HANDICAP. Of £145. One mile and a-quarter. Spiral 9 0 Tres Sec . , 1 S Run 8 4 Wahipe Niti 7 0 Royal Banquet 7 13 Spiral is a class above the others here but is not nearly as seasoned as his opponents. Ruri is also Ukely to be all the better for the race. Royal Banquet has the necessary racing condition and looked a picture at Marton. Tres 'sc should run a good race, but Wahine Nui will have to be taken on trust over this distance. Good backing may come for ROYAL BANQUET. . SPIRAL. 3.15SEAFIELD HANDICAP. Of £ll5. Seven furlongs and a-quarter.

Despite the fact that she rap well f.i this course in May Golden Hair’s form at Riccarton was not good enough to give her a winning chance. Farmer, who usually races well when fresh, is reported to be galloping well at Fordell. Passion Fruit’s, second to Heritage at Marton will ensure him of a big following. West Tor scarcely begins well enough, but Senior is a good sort who has won at Randwick. Gold Mission, Slippery and Ruri are likely to fulfil other engagements. Midian has been galloping in good style’ and Limulus should be improved by his race at Marton. Severe, Bun Fight and Carfex all have prospects. A great deal will depend upon the jump out from the tapes. Three who may find favour are PASSION FRUIT. FARMER. SEVERE. 4.9— DURIE HACK HANDICAP. Of £l5O. Six furlongs.

There is no shortage of speedy hacks in this field. On Marton form Hunting Cat should again account for Celerimus, but good hack though h 2 is he will encounter plenty of opposition from the three-year-olds Alchemic." Lady Ruler and Lowenberg. all of whom are well, above the average. Gold Gleam. Grand Score and Chikara can all go fast, while lower down the handicap are promising horses in Thane. Arouse. Mustang and Waipiro. At least half a dozen runners will be given solid support, but the main fancies may be ALCHEMIC. LOWENBERG. HUNTING CAT.

4.45— FLYING HANDICAP. Of £l2O. Six furlongs. Curie 9 0 Haul Monde 8 0 Mother Galilee 7 Superior 8 8 Refresher 111 Gold Mission S 0 Ilororata " 6 Slippery 8 0 11 Duee i 1> Good horse though he is it is doubtful whether Curie can begin quickly enough to have a winning chance on the turning course. The damp tracks will suit Mother Superior, though she may need a race. Gold Mission is a fit mare and a better one than most believe her to be. She should hold Slippery safely on New Plymouth form. Haut Monde, Galilee, Hororata and II Duce were all such smart two-year-olds that their form will be watched with great interest. Haut Monde has been gallop’ng in great style lof late. Refresher may need the race ; tc sharpen him up. The favourites may i be HAUT MONDE. MOTHER SUPERIOR. GOLD MISSION. WITH A 808 TAIL MONEY MINE’S SUCCESS Money Mine, winner of the Otago Hunt Cup Steeples and second in the Hunters’ Flat ’Handicap at the Otago Hunt meeting last Saturday, had been off the scene for over three years. Now 11 years old, he is a bay gelding by Paper Money from the Martian mare Martifors, the dam also of Money Mint and Kilstar, and he is still owned by Mr. W. Swale, who bought him as a five-year-old from C. Gieseler, who had taken him over from Mr. J. M. Samson. He was a useful horse once, winning several middle-distance races, including the Oamaru Cup, Ashburton Handicap and D.J.C. Birthday arid’ King George Handicaps. Prior to his racing last week,’ the southern critic “Sentinel” wrote about him: “Money Mine appeared at Winga* tui this week minus a tail. He has been ‘docked,’ and the curtailment of his caudal appendage is rnarked by a continuous protest supplied by a wobbly stump. Money Mine is inbred to the Semolina taproot,, which gave us Martian, one of the greatest sires ever known in New Zealand, and to Positano, who sired four Melbourne Cup winners and the dams of two more; and then he appears on a racecourse vith a cob tail!”

HADRIAN’S TWO WINS SMART TIPPLER COLT • The three-year-old classic position often undergoes radical changes as the new season opens, and it appears that this is happening in Australia at present. Young Idea, the champion two-year-old of last season, did not gain many friends with his somewhat lucky defeat of Hall Mark in the Underwood Stakes at Williamstown a fortnight ago, and he must have lost a lot of caste when he failed completely in the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday. While the doubts have been shading Young Idea a new star in Hadrian has apparently risen at Sydney. Hadrian’s performance in winning the Hobartville Stakes at Warwick Farm last Saturday week, even though easily in course record time, might not have brought him into much favour for the later important classics, but now that he nas since added the newly-insti-tuted Canterbury Guineas last Saturday to his record he is sure to have drawn more than ordinary notice. Three weeks ago he was weakening at the end of half a mile in a six furlongs race, but at his next start he won the seven furlongs Hobartville Stakes, and now he has scored in the nine furlongs Canterbury Guineas. It is a rapid rate of progression, and with such an easy four lengths’ victory on Saturday he is certain to have come into keen favour as a Derby colt. Hadrian was just an ordinary two-year-old, scoring twice, but his form was nothing unusual. He is obviously a muchimproved colt now. Bred by his owner, Mr. Hunter White, he is a son of Tippler (by Polymelus), whose stock so far have not been noted as stayers, and his dam is Figure, a mare by The Welkin’s sor Three from Forfar Lass, by Spearmint’s son Brakespear.

HORSES FROM HAWERA PROSPECTS AT WANGANUI. GOOD TEAM MAKES TRIP. (By "Limited.”) Lowenberg, Fersen and Golden Hair in charge of Trainer 0. Cox left for Wanganui by train yesterday morning. The two-year-old colt Gay Chief was also a passenger in the care of F. Erhorn. By the afternoon train J. Fryer’s team, Ruri, Alchemic and Soloist, M. Conway’s pair Ruaform and Ingenuity, and F. Walker’s Bay Sand were sent. Supreme Court slightly injured himself while galloping yesterday morning and was not included in Fryer’s team. J. Butler’s two-year-old Sea Adler, by Limond from Sea Star, and Lady Eka were passengers from Stratford. Supreme Court being an absentee, Hawera has not a hprse engaged in the Maiden race but has Ruaform, Soloist and Bay Sand to represent it in the hurdle race. Ruaform is in first rate trim and should be capable of running a good race. He has schooled well since the New Plymouth meeting and did an excellent working gallop yesterday morning. Soloist has given capital exhibitions in his schooling efforts and a big improvement on his New Plymouth showing can confidently be expected. J. Tucker is to have the mount on Soloist, and W. Bowden is to ride Ruaform. Another capable horseman, A. Jenkins, I has been engaged for Bay Sand, and the combination may effect a surprise as Bay Sand has made considerable improvement recently. Ingenuity figures in the Putiki Hack Handicap but has not been up long enough to have her chance highly assessed. Golden Hair, Carfex, Ruri and Fersen are in the Seafield Handicap. Golden Hair’s track work has not been of a nature to enthuse over, but Carfex has been working splendidly and with his light impost it will occasion no surprise to see him running prominently. Fersen has freshened since racing at New Plymouth and looks sure to run well. Ruri has built up into good condition and though he runs well when fresh he may be in need of more work yet. The Guineas candidates Lowenberg and Alchemic are set to race in the Durie Hack Handicap to-day and their show- , ings in that race will have considerable I bearing on the support to be accorded ' "hem in the Wanganui Guineas to be run ’ on Saturday. Both horses have improved since racing at New Plymouth, and ’ Lowenberg may be preferred over the [; distance, although the Wanganui track J us not the most suitable for the big, , iong -striding son of Lord Quex. , J. Fryer is confident that Alchemic will I tun out his race well. . i R. J. Flower is to ride Corowa and ’ Gold Gleam and probably Golden Hair. The Hawera centre is well represented, and horses likely to be among the prominent ones are Ruaform, Carfex, Lowenberg, Alchemic and Fersen.
