KING OF MIDHIRST
CROWNING CLOSES CARNIVAL. SPORTS CANDIDATE SUCCESSFUL. Decorated with ferns, balloons and coloured streamers, the Midhirst hall presented a gay appearance for the carnival dance on Monday night held as a grand finale to the Midhirst Tennis Club’s King Carnival. Voting closed at 10 o’clock, and considerable interest was displayed in the placings of the candidates. Mr. J. Ryan, Sports candidate, topped the poll with 5413 votes, Mr. R. Meads, Town candidate, was second with 4060, and the Country candidate, Mr. A. Mapp, had 2016 votes. The most impressive scene of the evening, the crowning ceremony, occurred at 11 o’clock, when at the sound of the bugles the procession, led by Mr. G. P. Harkness, the three kings and the attendant, Master Rowan Guthrie carrying the crown, marched through the hall to the stage, where stood the two courtiers, Masters Derek Howard and Robert Platt. Mr. J. Ryan ascended the throne and Mr. Harkness with due pomp and ceremony placed the crown on his head and pronounced him king of the carnival. Mr. Ryan then knighted the two unsuccessful candidates. The three kings were accorded musical honours. The Monte Carlo waltz was won byMiss Collffis and Mr Coleman. The competitions to raise funds for the Sports candidate were won by Mrs. O. Baskin, Messrs. S. Copeland, W. Mills, D. Harkness and R. Burton. Mesciames Running, C. Hodge, W. Platt and Miss Kowaleski won the competitions in aid of the Town candidate, and Mrs. H. Jensen won the competition for the Country candidate. Hooker’s Melody-makers’ orchestra supplied the music for the dancing and extras were played by Mr. and Mrs. Wright. Mr. W. Platt was master of ceremonies.
