OHURA PERSONAL NOTES. Mrs. Jenks (Auckland) was guest of honour at an enjoyable afternoon given by her old Ohura friends in Simpson’s Hall on Thursday afternoon. Items were given by Miss Lacey (pianoforte solo), Mrs. Jenks (songs), Miss Turnbull (songs) and the Rev. Walters (songs). The accompaniments were played by Mrs. Turnbull, who also led community singing. Those present were Mesdames Jenks, Hedley, Loft, Turnbull, Selby (Gisborne), M. Williams, Currie, Esdaile, Allen, Milne, Coldstream, McMinn, Worthington, -Watts, Norman, Smith, Rae, Mackay, Abbott (Kaponga), Misses J. MacClure, Turnbull, Lacey and Esdaile. Mrs. Craven entertained for Mrs. Jenks during the week. Mrs. Mary Williams was hostess at afternoon tea for Mrs. Jenks on Monday last. Miss Jean Turnbull is visiting Te Kuiti, where she is the guest of her sister, Mrs. T. Eastwood. Mrs. Selby (Gisborne) is the guest of her niece, Mrs. Norman Wilkie (Tatu). Mrs. Abbott has returned to Kaponga, she having spent the school holidays with Mrs. W. Mackay. Mrs, Janet Ingles (Wellington) spent a few days with her mother at Ohura. Miss Laurenspn has returned from Palmerston North, where she spent the vacation with her parents. The Misses MacKiimey and Butcher have returned from their holidays.

WOMEN’S DIVISION Okaiawa: The monthly meeting held ii the hall on Friday was well attended One new member was enrolled. Mrs. G Good presided. Mrs. John Kerrisk, o the Ohangai branch, gave an interesting demonstration of the making of kic gloves. Many other articles, such a; gloves, handbags, bookmarkers anc •posies, were handed round among the members. Two competitions were held one for an article made from material costing only Is, and the other for a paper hat made from the Daily News and four pins. Mrs. Anthony and Mrs. J. Kerrisk judged the first competition and Mrs. Lees, the second, the prizewinners being Miss F. Sutherland 1, Miss G. Stoddart 2 and Mrs. R. Shearer 3 and Mrs. Good (paper hat). The hostesses were Misses F. Sutherland and V. Mortimer. Mrs. Kerrisk was accorded a vote of thanks for the demonstration.

Waver ley: Miss H. C. Elmslie presided over the monthly meeting. Sympathy with the division’s president, Mrs. Macfarlane, was expressed. Correspondence was received from Mr. Hooker asking for assistance in the children’s health campaign and it was decided to ask all the members to buy health stamps. As the branch was carrying on similar work it was decided that no special effort be made. A collection of articles made by the disabled soldiers was on view.

Uruti: At the monthly meeting at Mrs. Haylock’s home Mrs. Oxenham presided over a good attendance. A, report of the recent conference at Wellington was read. Letters were received from the Blind Institute and the Soldiers’ Civil Re-establishment League asking for help in the selling of their wares and a letter was received from the organiser of the Health Camp campaign asking for financial help and one from headquarters for help for an unfortunate Hawke’s Bay family. It was decided to send for £5 worth of goods from the Blind Institute and the same from the Soldiers’ League, but to let the other two calls stand over for a while. Sympathy with Mrs. Laurence, an active member of the branch, in her prolonged indisposition, and with Mrs. Bell, whose little son has undergone an operation in the New Plymouth Hospital, was expressed. The competition for the afternoon—ap article made from one sugar bag—resulted: Mrs. McCabe 1 (gardening apron), Miss

Musker 2 (bath mat). The president thanked Mrs. Haylock for the use of her home and Mrs. C. Jones for judging the ! competition. Hostesses were Mesdames Cxenham and Musker. Alton-Kakaramea: A meeting was held c <-n September 3, Mrs. Tayler presiding. ’ Mrs. A. Tayler was welcomed as a new 1 member. A parcel of goods suitable for 3 Christmas presents was received from 1 the Returned Soldiers’ Association. It ’ was decided to hold a fair early next ’ year instead of the usual garden party. ■ An invitation to attend the birthday • party of the Manutahi branch was re- ■ ceived. A competition, “something new from something old,” was won by Mrs. Hunt, Mrs. Amon being second. Hostesses were Miss Foreman and Mesdames H. Palmer and Amon. Cardiff: At the monthly meeting Mrs. D. Brunton presided over a large attendance. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. Sexton in her recent bereavement. Mrs. Young’s report on the conference was read and discussed. The competition for the best shortbread was won by Mrs. Hollins and the limerick competition was won by Miss B. Mander. The hostesses were Mesdames W. Myers, P. Horn and A. Hoskin. Opunake: At the monthly meeting Mrs. W. A. Laing presided over a good attendance. Correspondence was received from Mr. Hooker in connection with the health camp campaign, and from Mr. W. A. Laing inviting the institute to appoint delegates to form a committee in connection with the health campaign. Mrs. R. Ritchie was appointed a voting delegate at the half-yearly meeting of the Federation Council and Mrs. J. Stronge to give an outline of the branch activities. The delegates appointed to represent the institute on the health committee were Mesdames W. A. Laing, T. W. Armstrong and Fraser. The presi- . dent welcomed Mrs. Hill, a visitor from Patea. Mrs. A. Allen gave a demonstration of different ways of knitting feet into sox. A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs. W. D. Richards and Fraser for their help at the birthday celebration. Much amusement was caused by the telling of “funny stories.” Those who could not tell a story or sing a song were fined ope penny. The secretary reported a small credit balance from the birthday tea. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Armstrong, Elgar and Hall. WOMEN’S DIVISION Opunake: J\t the monthly meeting of the branch Mrs. W. L. F. Chambers presided over about 40 members. Mrs. T. J. Mildenhajl was welcomed as a new member. The president thanked members for their response to the appeal for help for a needy case. Mrs. T. N. Watt was appointed delegate to the health campaign committee.' The secretary was authorised to use health stamps. Extra pamphlets to the cookery books are to be procured. It was decided to obtain patterns of toy animals from headquarters. The meeting voted 10s to the Flock House trainee fund. The hostesses were Mesdames Stark, M. Harvey, W. Wan apd W. A. Sheat.
