BILLY BOYS’ WORKSHOP
A HANGING NEWSPAPER RACK. This week, by special request, I am giving instructions for making a newspaper rack to hang on a wall. It can be constructed easily and cheaply from odd pieces of deal-wood taken from clean packing case wih do. Three eighths-inch wood should be sed the back, and quarter-inch foi the other Pa The sizes of the back arc given in diagram A. After planing both sides, mark out the shape carefully, and remove the parts not required with a tenon saw and chisel. Smooth the rough edges with the chisel and finish with gI fhT’front of the rack you will require a piece of wood 16 inches long and eight inches wide. Saw the top to an angle, as shown in diagram B, and smooth both sides and edges with glasspaper. Now cut the two end pieces to the sizes given at C. With both these pieces it is important that the back, front and bottom edges be planed square with the side faces. Use a try square from time to time to check the work during the planing. . A piece of wood 17 inches long ana three and a half inches wide will now be required for the bottom part, which must be planed on both sides and edges. In fixing the parts together use long
fine nails and strong glue. Fix the bottom part first at a distance of one and a half inches from the lower edge of the back. Next, glue and nail the ends in place one inch from the ends of the base. Before fixing the front slightly bevel the lower edge so that it rests evenly on the base. Diagram D will make this clear. The two ornamental strips on the front of the rack are three-eighths-inch half-round beading, glued on to hide the nail heads. Screw an eye-plate to the back of the rack near each top corner, and give the finished nolder two coats of varnish stain or paint. The Hut Carpenter.
