The entry of fat cattle numbered 272 head, the quality being slightly superior to last week’s offering. The sale opened with values firm at late rates, and continued on a fairly even basis throughout. In the store cattle section 123 head were forward, including a consignment of four and five-year good-con-ditioned steers from the north, which, under keen competition, sold from £6 to £7. These were the only store cattle in demand. The entry of 30 dairy cOws was an indifferent lot, and buyers showed preference for young cows close to profit, which sold to £6 2s 6d. In the fat sheep section 1771 were penned. The wethers were not up to recent standard, with only odd trucks of prime sheep. Ewes comprised the bulk oi the yarding, several -onsignments being of outstanding quality. Prime heavy ewes and wethers appreciated Is per head, but there was no alteration in values for medium quality sheep, while light and unfinished wethers were not in demand. The first spring lambs made their appearance. Two were forward, but only one was offered, and the price obtained was 28s. The entry of fat pigs numbered 76, and on account of the short supply baconers and porkers appreciated 5s per head in the first sales, but as the sale progressed values declined. A small entry of 46 store pigs was readily disposed of, large stores selling from 19s to 245. WESTFIELD TONE GOOD VALUES GENERALLY FIRM. SHEEP OF GOOD QUALITY. Auckland, Sept. 4. A very good tone was the feature of the weekly Westfield fat stock sale today. Generally values were very firm, baconers being the only class to ease slightly, while advances were made in a number of cases. Well finished stock are getting harder to procure, and the present levels are likely to hold. There was an increased offering of cattle, the total being about 750, at least one-third being comprised of steers, the quality of which was again exceptionally good. In spite of the heavier yarding competition remained very strong throughout the sale, and last week’s advanced values were fully sustained. Cow and heifer beef was also in good demand, and values remained very firm. The top prices of £l6 10s for a teer and £ll for a cow were for show cattle. Extra choice ox beef made 30s a ?001b; choice and prime, 26s to 295; secondary and plain, 23s to 255; prime young cow and heiferbeef, 26s to 295; other cow beef, 17s to 255. A full supply of calves did not include many heavier weights. A keen demand ruled and price levels again held. Lighter calves also sold well at fully recent rates. Runners, 50s to 120 s; vealers, 30s to 84s. Sheep of good quality were penned in. under average numbers, the short supply bringing about an advance in prices amounting to Is for wethers and 2s for ewes. Hoggets were in fair supply and also sold well at improved rates. Very few spring lambs were offered, the local graziers finding it hard to bring them to condition. Wethers, prime, 25s to 35s 3d; unfinished, 20s to 24s 9d; ewes, prime, 18s to 255; unfinished, 8s 6d to 17s 9d; hoggets, 16s to 265; spring lambs, 20s to 30s 6d. Fat pigs came forward in good numbers. Owing to the recent reduction in schedule rates for baconers, the demand for these was inclined to the easier, few selling above 5d a lb. Porkers, on the other hand, met with brisk competition at values fully firm on last week, prices being from sid to s?d a lb. A shorter yarding of stores was the subject of keen demand at well up to late rates. ADDINGTON SALE MARKET RECOVERS SLIGHTLY. SMALL ENTRY OF SHEEP. Christchurch, Sept. 4.
