BRIGHTER PROSPECTS.

Both dairy and sheep farmers throughout New Zealand should be heartened by the recent trend of the markets. In reaching 102 shillings butter is higher than it has been for two years, and the indications are that it may go higherstill, or at any rate be sustained about the present figure, for some while yet. The prediction has been made that it will reach 120 shillings, but though this is possible it would be unwise to count on it, for the market has a habit of fluctuating fairly violently about this time of the year. Although the cheese position is not so encouraging there has been a slight rise in this commodity, and so long as other foodstuffs remain firm cheese is likely to participate. Wool, too, is more promising than most people expected a few months ago. The Sydney sale this week experienced totally unexpected buoyancy, and though the finer grades of wool offered differ from the half and crossbreds that form the bulk of the New Zealand offering the latter is sure to firm in sympathy. .The winter sales held recently bear this out, for crutchings offered at Napier in a number of cases brought more than fleece wool at the last summer sales. Taken as a whole there is a definitely brighter horizon for the New Zealand primary producer than seemed possible a little while ago, and it should afford no little solace to those who have been passing through such a difficult period.
