HAULED UP MOUNTAIN

TANK TAKEN UP TO 5700 FEET. DIFFICULT TASK WITH TRACTOR. By Telegraph—Press Association. The Chateau, Sept. 2. Difficult problems were encountered by officials of the Ruapehu Ski Club yesterday when faced with the transport of a 400-gallon iron tank from Chateau Tongariro, National Park, to the 6000 feet level on Mount Ruapehu, where a new hut is to be built. The tank was placed on a sledge dragged behind a tractor. Sometimes the tractor was almost buried in snow and often in danger of turning over backwards. ? The tank was hauled up steep pinches by club members with a rope. The farthest point reached by the tractor, 5700 feet, is believed to be the highest a land vehicle has been in New Zealand. The tank reached the site at 5.15 p.m., after hours’ work.
