"LOWEST” TENDER
SHOULD IT ALWAYS BE ACCEPTED? PROTEST FROM CR. G. FLEMING. Whether the New Plymouth Borough Council was erring in continually ac-. cepting the lowest tenders for contract work was discussed at last nights meeting, when Cr. G. Fleming, declaring that the work should be done by the council itself in place of “poor dupes of workers,” entered a protest against the acceptance of the lowest tender of £695 for scavenging at the abattoirs. No action was taken by the council, which adopted the tender without further discussion. - “I don’t like this sort of thing, . Cr. Fleming declared. “The work is for a period of several years, and the lowness of the tender either means that the workers are skimping themselves or that the workers can not do the job satisfactorily at the contract price. The fact that the most recent holder of the contract has tendered a price of £750, compared with the accepted tender of £695 shows that the accepted price is too low. The work could easily be done by the council, which prefers that poor dupes of workers should make low tenders for the contract.” Cr. F. J. Hill: Tire men who are making the lowest tender did the work the year before last extremely well. Cr. Fleming made another protest and discussion closed.
