REGULATION FOR BUTTER VIEW ON OVERTURE OF DENMARK. MR. COATES SUPPORTS PRINCIPLEBETTER TO GIVE SURPLUS AWAY. (By Wire— Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. The reported desire of the Danish Government to co-operate with Australia and New Zealand in regulating the international butter market with the object of securing more profitable prices was referred to-day to the Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates. The Minister said that when he was at London recently Danish representatives had endeavoured to get into touch with him through the British Government for a discussion of tire position. He had been perfectly willing to meet them andto examine any proposals they had to bring forward but delay in reaching a meat agreement had prevented any discussion. „ . , Mr. Coates said that so far no official request had been received from the Danish Government. If it was found desirable to hold discussions New Zealand could be represented by the High Commissioner, Sir James Parr, and officials ffi his office who were fully in touch with the position. Any suggestions could then be reported back to New Zealand. Continual attempts at the expansion of production where there was only a limited market for profitable consumption were deprecated by Mr. Coates. His personal view was that some form of regulation of supplies would be both useful and desirable until such time as markets again showed signs of expanding. It was utterly ruinous for Denmark, New Zealand and Australia to think that they could go on turning out more and more butter and forcing the price down. Mr. Coates also referred to the effect on prices of the decline in supplies last season. That was an indication of what could be accomplished. . Mr. Coates said it would be infinitely better to. regulate supplies, which would bring satisfactory prices, and to dispose of the surplus as a gift to people both in New Zealand and abroad who did not have sufficient money to become normal consumers.
