HEPBURN’S SCREEN DRESS
- MOST CHIC WOMAN IN FILMS. When Katharine Hepburn flashes accross the screen in “Break of Hearts,” I predict that she will be acclaimed the most chic woman in films, says Bernard Newman, RKO Radio designer. First, she has the type of figure that a designer likes to dress; she has the elusive quality that makes some women smart in an apron; and last, but by ho means least, she has the good breeding to feel comfortable in correct clothes. In addition, Hepburn has height and enough breadth of shoulder to set off her costumes. She has a sprightliness that gives life to garments, and while she is as slim as a willow, she has lovely, graceful lines.' Of course, to costume a star of Hepburn’s type, it requires the complete cooperation of. the star herself. This she gives. While Hepburn apparently gives little thought to -dress off the screen, when she is required to wear smart, modern clothes on the screen, she takes as much interest in them as she does in every detail of the productions in which she appears.
Hepburn has the dual ability to wear sports clothes as well as she does formal attire, and she looks equally fine in either. She can wear starkly simple clothes, which few actresses would dare' to attempt, and they are particularly ravishing on her. Sculptured clothes are her forte, and soft drapery that clings to her slim silhouette. ’
To me, she puts drama into her clothes just as she does into her acting, concludes Newman.
“Photographic Mind.” George Brent has a “photographic memory.” This is believed to be a natural rather than an acquired trait, like writing poetry or eating caviare. It is said that he never forgets and never needs a cue. He simply glances at his script and it is as it were photographed on his mind.
