GALE DESTRUCTION

CENTRAL HAWKE’S BAY SWEPT. TWO OUTBUILDINGS DEMOLISHED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Waipukurau, Last Night. A south-westerly gale of exceptional severity, rivalling that of Saturday, has increased in velocity since yesterday afternoon, causing interruption intermittently this morning to the electric supply. Wireless masts, trees, fences, sheds and pastures suffered. A private garage was completely demolished and the car inside damaged. The roof of a Takapau outbuilding was carried bodily five chains across the road and fell on 'a telephone line, interfering with communication for a time as far south as Palmerston North. An uprooted tree damaged the line at Porangahau near Arlington station and also temporarily impeded traffic. Cars were held up for a time at Takapau. > The wind had not abated this evening.
