The death of Mr. Childe Hassam, the distinguished American artist, is reported by cable from New York. At the annual meeting of the Parliamentary Press gallery yesterday Mr. T. F. Reilly (Dominion) was elected chairman and Mr. C. G. Noble Campbell (Evening Post) vice-chairman, reports the Press Association. Canon E. H. Strong, warden of St. John’s College, Auckland, and formerly vicar of St. Mary’s parish, New Plymouth, has been visiting New Plymouth and will leave to-day for the north. Mi - . J. Sibbin, manager of the Auckland representative Association football team which defeated New Plymouth on Wednesday, left yesterday for Wellington, where the team is to play a match. Mr. A. J. Baker, inspecting engineer of the Public Works Department, Wellington, visited Taranaki yesterday and in company with the district engineer, Mr. P. Keller, inspected various works in Taranaki.

Mrs. C. J. E. Smith (New Plymouth), Mrs. L. Kay (Inglewood) and Mr. B. E. H. Collinge (New Plymouth) left New Plymouth yesterday for Hamilton, where they will compete in the Auckland and Waikato badminton championship tournament. Mrs. D. MacPherson, M.A., headmistress of the Craighead Diocesan Giris’ School, Timaru, for the past five years, has tendered her resignation to the Bishop of Christchurch and the Diocesan Board of Education, states a Press Association message. She will return to England at the end of the school year.

Among the visitors to the combined hunts clubs’ meeting at New Plymouth yesterday were Messrs. J. E. Palmer, Waverley, president of Egmont-Wanga-nui-Hunt Club, S. C. Tonks, president of the Egmont Racing Club, D. J. Malone, president of the Stratford Racing Club, A. Good, president of the Opunake Racing Club, Russell Grace, Wanganui, J. C. Gray, Waverley, K. McK. Duncan, Hunterville, J. C. Davis, Wanganui, W. P. Rtissell and H. Coyle, Wellington, W. R. S. Brewer (Waitotara), W. O. Williams (Hawera) and Dr. W. T. Simmons (Patea). '
