Statisticians’ Conference.

The New Zealand Government Statistician, Mr. J. W. Butcher, will leave Auckland by the Niagara next week to attend a conference of Empire statisticians which is to open at Ottawa on September 13. The conference will be comprised of official representatives of the United kingdom, the Irish Free State, Northern Ireland, Australia, Canada, South Africa and India. Its purpose is to secure a uniform basis for the presentation of all important facts relating to the Empire in a form easily comparable—a service of particular value in these days when Governments enter so closely into national trading arrangements. Mr. Butcher will return to New Zealand immediately the conference ends, as arrangements for the census are in preparation. Mr. D. J. Cruickshank will be acting-Government Statistician during Mr. Butcher’s absence.
