HIGH SCORING MATCH

OLD BOYS’ 19 TO 11 WIN

STRATFORD OLD BOYS BEATEN. BACKS DECIDE THE ISSUE. Leading by 6 to 5 at half-time the Old Boys team, showing superiority in the backs, improved its position in the second spell to beat Stratford Old Boys by 19 (five tries, two converted) to 11 (twO tries, one converted, and a penalty goal). Played at Western Park, New Plymouth, the game was always ragged and only occasionally were bright back mover ntonts executed. The forwards were fairly evenly matched and during the earlier stages Stratford held the ascendancy, but as the game progressed the New Plymouth pack was able to provide its backs with more than a full share of the ball, and this decided the Issue. On the day there was little between the individual forwards. Whittington was perhaps the hardest toiler and outstanding forward on the field.

Although New Plymouth may credit its win to superiority in the backs, there was little sparkling back play and really good movements were few and far between. Galbraith was the best back on the field. He made many fine runs that placed his side within striking distance. Morton was quick off the mark and was a useful connecting link, while Richardson displayed a fine turn of speed. When given the ball, Cochrane made the best of his opportunities, but McKenzie was the live wire of the Stratford backs. Sound Oh defence, he was a forceful runner. The teams were:—

New Plymouth Old Boys: Priar; Haines, Richardson, Ford; Morton, Galbraith; Hoskin; C. Evans; Wheeler, Luxton, T. Evans, Mace; Whittington, Ulenberg, Somerton Stratford Old Boys: Adlam; Hunwick, Cochrane, Barlow; Henry, McKenzie; Walker; Bonner; Kofoed, W. Evans, Murphy, Bulmer; Heath, Goodman, O’Keefe. Seizing an opportunity when Richardson flung a difficult pass for Haines to miss, Him wick and Cochrane kicked through. Cochrane gained possession of the ball from a rebound and dashing along the sideline he handed off two opponents and scored under the posts. McKenzie goaled. The New Plymouth forwards reached half-way with a fine forward dribbling rush. Picking up the ball cleverly from a melee Ford transferred to Richardson, who outpaced the opposition to score in a handy position. Hoskin’s kick went astray.

A rattling rush in which the backs also participated was responsible for New Plymouth’s next points. Thrusting aside all opposition Old Boys swept down the field. At three-quarter way Morton picked up the ball and evading Adlam scored in a handy position. Galbraith’s kick at goal was deflected by charging Stratford forwards. Receiving the all on the blind side of a scrum Galbraith raced ; along the line but was checked in the corner- The forwards rallied round and from the ensuing scramble Mace bullocked over to score in the corner. The kick failed. A snappy back movement resulted in Richardson scoring under the posts. The ball travelled down the rear line to Ford, who cut in cleverly and sent the ball on to Morton and Richardson, who had run round, ' Galbraith goaled, Breaking away the Stratford forwards entered foreign territory. Henry secured the ball and passed to McKenzie. Haines, ■racing across quickly, intercepted just short of the line. Haines in collaring McKenzie was crashed against the goal ipost and had to retire. A moment later McKenzie kicked a goal from a penalty near the posts, From a scrum on Stratford’s twentyfive Hoskin worked the blind side. Galbraith cut in and drawing a second man transferred to Ford, who after a 30 yards dash along the line swerved past Adlam and scored near the posts. Galbraith A series of skirmishes on New Plymouth’s line terminated when Walker passed the ball to McKenzie, who bullocked over in the corner. The kick failed.
