ISLAND LEAGUE MATCH NORTH WINS THRILLING GAME SOUTH ISLAND’S FINE FORWARDS. By Telegraph—PrCss Association. Auckland, Last Night. In a thrilling. game on heavy ground after recent rain North Island defeated South Island in the Rugby League game at Carlaw Park to-day by 19 points to 18. North scored five tries, two converted, to four tries, three converted. The South Island forwards played a great game and it developed into a test between the South vanguard and the North backs. Lacking only in the finef points and combination in the rearguard, South was equally as good as the opposition.

Cooke and Satherley played outstanding games for North, while the whole South Island pack on the day was worthy of NeW Zealand honours. The teams were:—

North: N. Campbell; L. Brown, A. E. Cooke, E. Mineham; W. Tittleton, S. Prentice; R. Powell; W. Telford, L. Hutt, J. Laifd, C. Satherley, H. Large, T. Timms. South: M. Standeven; F. Logie, H. Knight, A. Beban; J. Amos, L. Young; J. McCarthy; J. Calder, R. Ward, W. McNeight, J. Anderson, W. Glynn,.P. Serra. South did the early attacking until Cooke broke through in a fast burst but lost the ball after beating the full-back. South gained the ball from the scrums, but North covered quickly and little progress was made. The South forwards were great* in the loose and worried the Opposition, which, however, defended stubbornly. From a poor drop-out after a force-down ArnOS kicked the ball against Hutt, who scored an <!asy try by the posts from the rebound. Satherley converted. . Knight shot into a breach made, in the North backs and passing between himself, Amos, Glynn and Serra saw the last-named touch-down wide out. Amos kicked a fine goal. North immediately scored a fine try when Prentice made a good opening from which Powell touched down. The kick failed. . , Cooke made a brilliant opening which would have resulted in a try but for a poor pass to Timms when a try was certain. North was better in passing and positional play, and just on half-time Brown scored wide out after several players had handled. C. Satherley again tailed with the kick. Immediately on resuming South rushed play to the North line, where Glynn took the ball from Campbell and scored between the posts. Young Converted. South 1 then attacked strongly for a period until the North rearguard drove it back with good passing. Penalties against North, however, spoiled some good movements. At last the North backs were seen in their best form when Cooke started a fine movement and finished it by scoring himself behind the posts. C. Satherley converted. South was not to be denied, and when Campbell mishandled a pass back from Brown the South forwards were all in line- and Serra dribbled over and scored between the posts. Young converted. , Thrilling play followed, the South forwards giving a fine exhibition in the loose. South was having the better of exchanges in which there was fast forward play, and there was loud cheering when' South took the lead through McKneight charging down Powell’s kick on the line and scoring. Serra failed from well out. North missed a great chance when Mincham made a fine run but Telford dropped his pass. Cooke made amends by scoring from a fine opening by prentice. Campbell failed to convert. With only three minutes to go South made desperate efforts to score, but the defence held. North South Mr. M. Wetherill refereed.
