BESTOWAL OF PALLIUM

EMBLEM FOR ARCHBISHOP METROPOLITAN OF NEW ZEALAND. SYMBOL OF HIGHER JURISDICTION. SECOND TIME IN CHURCH HISTORY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Aug. 15. Archbishop O’Shea received to-day at the hands of the Bishop of Christchurch, Dr. Brodi , the sacred pallium, symbolising his participation in the supreme pastoral power of the Pope. By the ceremony Archbishop O’Shea officially succeeds the late Archbishop Redwood as Archbishop of Wellington and Metropolitan of New Zealand. ( The ceremony took place in St. Mary s Church after a solemn pontifical high mass- There were about 50 church dignatories present from all parts of New Zealand and there was standing room only in the church. The address was delivered by Bisnop Whyte, who said the ceremony had been seen for only the'second time in the history of the church in New Zealand. The first occasion was in 1887, when Archbishop Redwood received the sacred pallium at the hands of Bishop Luck, Auckland. Well-wishers of the new archbishop would fervently pray that very many years would pass before the third occasion arose. The pallium signified that the archbishop had received from his successor higher jurisdiction than was given to ordinary bishops. Loyalty to the Pope could not be separate from loyalty to all who shared in his .authority. They therefore that morning professed reverence for their new Metropolitan and his personal merits enhanced their joy and loyalty. x. The whole Dominion, said Bisnop Whyte, was interested in the ceremony. Archbishop O’Shea’s visits to cathedrals and parish churches would give keener pleasure to the bishops, priests and the faithful. His long experience in ruling, his intimate acquaintance with existing needs and his foresight and progressive ideas would render his visits helpful and heartening.
