HAWKES BAY’S BIG SCORE. SUPERIOR IN COMBINATION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hastings, Last Night As the result of better understanding and combination among the backs the Hawkes Bay Rugby representatives beat Canterbury at Hastings to-day by 24 points to 5. Canterbury had the help of a strong wind in the first half. Hawkes Bay obtained the first score 15 minutes after the start when Collett broke away to send Hannigan over. The kick missed the goal. Le Quesne was responsible for the second score when, from a scrum at halfway, he cut cleanly through the defence to pass to Bradley, who sent Rolls over. Webb goaled. . The next try came when Clothier, the Hawkes Bay half, ran round the blind side from a scrum on the Hawkes Bay twenty-five, then passed to Patchett at-half-way for the winger to evade Brown and Eathorne and score after a great run. The kick was not successful. Canterbury’s try came when from a line-out near the Hawkes Bay line after a number of forwards had handled the ball Sweeney went over for a popular try. McAuliffe goaled. After the spell Hawkes Bay .soon settled down. Apsey after a good run was brought down by the full-back, but got up again to run five yards to score in the corner. Patchett scored a try when the forwards kicked the ball over the line and he followed up fast. Le Quesne goaled. Clothier again cut round the scrum to pass to Rolls, who ran to the ful-back and gave Apsey a clear run to score between the posts. Bradley goaled and the final score was Hawkes Bay 24, Canterbury 5.
