AN AID TO SHIPPING.
DETECTION OF OBSTRUCTIONS. BRITISH INVENTION TESTED. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. London, Aug. 14. A new invention to safeguard shipping in fog, called an obstruction detector, was satisfactorily tested at Flamboro Head. '• It works similarly to a searchlight, but does not throw a ray. It can be pointed from the bows of a vessel and will detect an obstruction within 10 miles.
During the tests the detector located ships invisible to the naked eye. The inventor claims that it can also detect aeroplanes before they come into sight.
