Allhusen is the guest of Miss P. Corry, Egmont Village. Mrs. S. Wanklyn was hostess at afternoon tea on Monday. Mrs. Partridge, New Plymouth, visited Inglewood recently. Mrs. Bakewell has returned from a holiday at Tauranga. Mrs. E. Crossman was hostess at bridge during the week. Mrs. N. T. Roch entertained on Wed-, nesday afternoon. Miss H. McLaggan is a patient in the New Plymouth hospital. Mesdames Uniacke, Amess, G. Johnston and the Misses Moon and Beale visited Stratford for the drama festival held by the Women’s Institute on Monday and Tuesday. Miss Papps is visiting Inglewood. Mrs. A. C. Ward, Ohawe, assisted by the committee of the Hawera branch of the Red Cross Society, organised a bridge and five hundred afternoon in the Red Cross rooms on Wednesday to augment the funds. Mrs. Dymond won the highest score for bridge and Mrs. Barraclough the five hundred, while a lucky seat prize was won by Mrs. Meyer.

Croquet Club Evening. There were about 60 present at Miss Stock’s studio on Tuesday at an evening of one-act plays arranged by Mrs. W. G. Simpson to augment the funds of the Hawera Croquet Club. The plays presented were all new to the audience, of particular interest being that of the W.E.A. drama circle, which made its first appearance in public in “A World Without Men,” by Philip Johnston. The cast included Mesdames H. Walker, J. W. Velvin, G. Villars, C. J. Harris and Misses P. Morris, Johnston and O. Harding. Mr, W. G. Simpson and Mrs. A. J. Corrigan read “A Marriage Has Been Arranged” and the quarrel scenes from “The School for Scandal,” and Mrs. W. G. Strange presented Mesdames Muir, G. Villars and Miss D. Thomas in Gertude Jennings’ play “Cats Claws.” Those present in the audience included Mesdames Strange,-F. W. Horner, C. H. Washer, A. H. Guy, F. C. King, C. B. Bullock, W. Mundy (Christchurch), J. Hobbs, Tugwell, J. C. Smith, W. R. Shaw, W. T. Good, G. H. Percy, Fairweather, W. F. Buist, R. Campbell, B. Malone, F. A. Quin, Simpson, A. E. Stevens, C. 'h. Stephenson, Reid, J. Ekdahl, G. Strange, G. A. Burgess, and Misses M. Green, P. Ekdahl, E. Burgess, J. McCall, Taylor, V. Scheib, H. Good, M. Guy, J. Buchanan, M. C. Power, M, Wilson and Whittington. ' WOMEN’SINSTITUTE Tikorangi: The institute held a successful social afternoon at the hall to benefit federation funds. Most interesting of the afternoon’s entertainment was a play reading, those taking part being Mrs. N. Heppell, Mrs. C. Mahy and Mrs. V. Jones and Miss P. Beaven, all the readers giving a creditable reading. Songs were sung by Mrs. Beaven and Mrs. Rolins, a pianoforte solo was given by Mrs. Widner and recitations by Mrs. A. Rackley. A bring and buy stall did brisk business, the net proceeds being over £2. The hostesses, Mesdames N. Heppell, V. Jones and C. Maby, had arranged the tables with spring bulbs. Eahotu: The August monthly meeting at which the president presided, was attended by 11 members. It was decided to send a donation towards Mrs. Kaye’s name being enrolled on the roll of honour. Some of the members are to attend a group meeting at Warea. The competition for the month resulted: Mrs. T. Conray and Mrs. J. Conroy 1 equal, Mrs. Renau 2. On August 13, the institute held a euchre afternoon. The women’s first prize was won by Miss H. Kahui and a consolation prize went to Mrs. R. Morgan. The men’s prize was won by Mr. G. Horo and the consolation by Mr. W. Horo. BRING AND BUY AFTERNOON. PIHAMA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. The supper room of the Pihama hall was artistically decorated with bowls of spring bulbs, violets, freesias and Iceland poppies, and with rugs on the floor presented the air of a drawing room when the members of the Presbyterian Pihama Ladies’ Guild were hostesses at a “bring and buy” party in honour of their first birthday on Wednesday afternoon. At one end of the room with a table to itself was a beautiful cake made by Mrs. Allan, junr., and iced by her daughter, Miss Margaret Allan, with One blue candle in the centre. This was later lit by Mrs. Wodd and the cake was cut and handed round.

A very enjoyable programme was given by friends from Opunake, including solos by Mesdames O’Sullivan, Trot* ter and Whitehead, violin solo by Mrs. Watt, accompanied by Mrs. O’Sullivan, vocal duet by Mesdames Weatherhead and Trotter, and a humorous i'eacling by the Rev. G. Wood. These items were interspersed with competitions and community singing, the winners of the competitions being Mrs. Sheat and Miss Holmes. Mrs. T. N. Watt was accompaniste. A stall laden with vegetables, eggs, cakes, jams, sauces, flowers and a quanity of work did good business. An elaborate afternoon tea was much enjoyed. Mr. Wood thanked all for their presence and help and paid a tribute to the Six women who had done sp much during the year.
