APPOINTMENT FOR AUSTRALIA. BRITISH GOVERNMENT’S DECISION. British Wireless Rugby, August 14. The British Government ..has decided to appoint a High Commissioner in Australia with functions comparable to those of the High Commissioner in. Canada and South Africa. ■ Sir Geoffrey Granville Whiskard, assistant Under-Secretary of State for Dominion. Affairs, has been ’ selected as the first High Commissioner and he will leave England for Canberra early next year to take up the post. The Daily Telegraph says there is no intention of appointing a similar officer in New Zealand, where the. Government wishes to retain the system by which the Governor-General represents the British Government in addition to His Majesty, despite constitutional changes approved by the Imperial Conference in 1920.
