FACTS DISTORTED
CLOSING OF KAWARAU DAM.
NOTICE GIVEN TO ALL CONCERNED.
By Telegraph—Press Association.
Invercargill, Aug. 6.
“A distortion of the facts” was the way a prominent Cromwell resident described a statement made by a miner last week that 500 men had been thrown cut of work by the opening of the Kawarau dam gates. There had not, he said, been anything like 500 men working in the bed of the Kawarau or Molyneux Rivers. Those who were working in the Kawarau (from 60 to 80) prior to the opening of the gates had been joined by a number of other miners when the river was practically dewatered.
The maximum rise Of the fiver as the result of the opening of the gates had been two feet, not seven feCt as alleged.. It was true that one miner won £5O during the closing off the gates and others lesser sums.
Intimation of the closing of the gates had . beCn givCn to those concerned, as had notice of the opening. As a'matter of fact the gates had not been closed tr help miners or prospectors, but to enable certain to be carried out by the engineer of the Kawarau Mining Company.
