Values of Clover.

The experiment of a Milton farmer have proved - that Montgomery red clover is superior to ordinary .English broad red clover in leaf production-and persistency, . reports a Dunedin correspondent. A field was sown in rye-grass with Montgomery red clover in one half, and broad red in the other. After the second season the broad red commenced to go out and is now non-existent, whereas in that portion which was sown with Montgomery red clover there lias , been good growth each year. Montgomery red clover is still persisting and has been sufficiently profuse to give a balanced grazing pasture. Stock Imports. While the controversy rages back and forth in New Zealand as to whesier the embargo oh the direct importation on live stock from the United Kingdom 1 should be lifted or retained, plans for reviving a scheme to assist importers of pedigree stock are being considered in Australia. Commenting on this proposal, the Melbourne Leader says; “The need for using the best beef in aiding Australia to capture the chilled beef market has had an important bearing on this suggestion. The present cost of importing a pedigree bull, valued at say £lO5, is approximately £270, including cost of purchase.”

Veterinary Forces. . The necessity for strengthening the veterinary forces of the Dominion was emphasised by the deputy chairman of the Executive Commission of Agriculture, Sir Francis Frazer, at the recent annual conference of the New Zealand Veterinary Association. He said that tha membership of the profession was

at present numerically inadequate fully to carry out measures of disease control that would be of the greatest- benefit to the country and to the reputation of its live stock products. New Zealand had one qualified veterinarian to every 750,000 head of stock of all kinds, whereas in England and America the ratio was one veterinarian to every 16,000 haa£
