Permission to erect hoardings at the corners of Okoke and Pukearuhe Roads and Tongaporutu stock route on the main north road was refused to Mr. J. G. Aagaard, Stratford. Councillors agreed tliat it was not desirable to create a precedent. Several prosecutions were pending as a result of an inspection 6f licenses and lights made by him and the borough inspector, reported Mr. G. F. Rowe. Three heavy traffic licenses had been taken out and fifty-three drivers’ licenses were issued. Only 15 head of stock was found on the roads. Fees collected were: Heavy traffic £lO 15s 4d, drivers’ licenses £lB ss, poundage 15s, total £29 15s 4d. ■ The question of a revaluation of the county was brought up by tire chairman. Some ratepayers had obtained a revaluation and consequently were not paying rates on an equal basis to those whose properties had not been revalued, he said. Some ridings were affected more than others and a general revaluation would bring all ratepayers into line. Cr. Barnitt pointed out that the man who had fanned well paid more than the one who had let his property slip WORK IN THE RIDINGS.
The council decided to apply for a revaluation. In the Tikorangi riding weather conditions had been unsuitable for the extension of the mejal on Tikorangi Road west, but the work would be carried out
as soon as possible, reported the engineer, Mr. N. C. Fookes. In the Waihi riding the large washout on Onairo Road had been repaired and metalled, and a new 12-inch culvert installed to replace the one washed out. Mataro Road showed signs of excessive wear and the surfaceman had been instructed to re-gravel all such places. In the Urenui riding one new concrete pipe culvert had been installed on Avenue Road at the washout near Bleakley’s. The old gravel pit on Piko Road near H. Whittaker’s was inspected with the view to deviating and lowering the road to enable the gravel to be worked, but as the new roadway would require to be above flood level in the Urenui River, the amount of gravel that could be quarried would be too small to warrant the expense of the deviation. Tenders should be called for the supply of gravel from some other source. Slips had been numerous and troublesome on nearly all roads, and had taken up a great deal of the men’s time.
In the Uruti riding definite arrangements had been made for the reformation and metalling of approximately four miles of the Uruti-Ngatoto road, and engineering surveys were being attended to. The construction of the Waitara River bridge, Moki Road, had progressed ds well as the weather would allow, all piers, abutments, struts and straining beams having been placed in position. Given reasonable weather, the bridge should be completed about the end of August. The formation of Clifton Road in the Mokau riding had been practically completed. The sites of the new bridges to be built over the Kiwi stream, Okau Road, and Mangapepeki stream, Mangaenga Road, had been laid off, and plans were being prepared for the works. On the Auckland-Wellington main highway the reconstruction work between Urenui and Ohanga junction had been hampered by weather, the work done for the month consisting of regrading and metalling the road through the Urenui township and widening on the Onairo hill
The contractor had started the erection of the new depot, and workshop at Urenui.
