MANAIA TOWN BOARD DECISION.
ROUTINE BUSINESS DISCUSSED.
A reduction of id in £1 in the rates
levied by the Manaia Town Board was decided upon by the board on Thursday evening. There were present Commissioners L. C. Harrison (chairman), L. A. Walters, J. A. G. Cosgrove, H. Mead, G. R. Watts and A. J. Christie. Sympathy with and a hope for the speedy recovery of Cr. W. H. Robinson were expressed. . In view of the tenancy of the Waimate domain not expiring till December 31 next the fencing off of the bush portion of the reserve and the leasing of the grass lands were deferred till the first meeting of the board in January. The clerk’s action in letting the board room for elocution classes at the same tariff as for dancing classes was confirmed. The foreman reported that for the month he had cleaned out the settling tanks, proceeded with completing the avenue of trees in the main street, cleaning out gutters and culverts, cleaned out water-tables, carted balance of firewood and posts to the yard and carried out certain road patching and maintenance work. A start had been made to fence off a piece of land prior to planting trees. The supervision of No. 5 scheme labour had taken up a fair amount of time. Mr. J. Silvester’s application for a water connection to his property was granted. If replies from adjoining property owners are satisfactory, it was decided to proceed with making a drain for the purpose of taking the storm water away from Ngatai Street. It was resolved to sake a grant to the fund of the Egmont National Park Board. The band conductor, Mr. J. A. G. Cosgrove, reported that owing to the inclemency of the weather the practices for the month were only fairly well attended. As most of the bandsmen are taking part in the forthcoming revue and rehearsals were held three nights a week it was decided to hold one night a week practice until after the performance. During the month the annual ball, was held under bad weather conditions, but it was a financial success. Credit was due U the organiser and designer of the decoration, Bandsman C. Abbott, to all the bandsmen who assisted, to the women’s committee for their able assistance and to donors, both of cash and eatables, towards the catering. Cr. Mead congratulated the band on the great effort made by it in bringing the ball to such a successful conclusion and his remarks were endorsed by the board.
Permission was granted the Hawera Ramblers’ Cycle Club to hold a series of cycle races through the town, subject to the club taking responsibility for accidents.
A competition conducted by the Manaia Tennis ■ and Croquet Club for a pair of tea waggon covers, made' and given by Miss "Washer, was won by Mrs. limes.
