PUBBULPORE FIGHT
BRITISH INVESTIGATIONS. DETAILED ACCOUNT AWAITED. British Wireless. Rugby, July 25. Mr. R. A. Butler, Parliamentary Undersecretary for India, answered a question in the House of. Commons to-day regarding the reported incident near Jubbulpore, India, in which British soldiers and Indian villagers were concerned. He said that the India Office had so far only a brief telegraphic rqport of this regrettable incident, but a more detailed account would be received when the local investigations were completed. He read the official statement issued at Simla.
A cable received yesterday stated that the entire First Battalion of the King’s Liverpool Regiment was confined to barracks at Pubbulpore. The soldiers were not allowed to speak to each other pending an inquiry into village fights. It was stated that a soldier frightened women in the village of Karodi, upon which their fellow villagers attacked him. His comrades, armed with sticks, embarked upon reprisals and raided an adjoining village, believing it to be Karodi. They injured 13 villagers, one of whom died.
