BILLY BOYS’ WORKSHOP

STAND FOR A LADY’S BICYCLE. This week, again by special request, I am giving simple instructions for making a strong stand for a lady’s bicycle. If the stand is to be fixed against the side of a shed, as shown in the first diagram, only six pieces of planed three-quarter-inch wood will be required. The upright, A, and the horizontal part, B, which should be cut to the lengths indicated, are three-and-a-half inches wide, while the diagonal pieces, C, are three inches wide. With a chisel, bevel the front end of the part B for a distance of about four inches, as at D, Nail the parts A and B together at the back corner, and then saw off the ends of the two diagonal pieces, one on each side of the other parts, with two stout screws in each end, as shown in the diagram. Now cut two triangular pieces to the sizes given at E, and screw one on each side of the parts A andß, at the back

corner. The stand can be fixed to the side of the. shed with two or three screws through the back upright, the lower part being held firmly in place by a couple of screws driven through into the floor.

If the stand is not to be fixed in any way, an additional piece wood will be required, cut to the sizes given in the last diagram. This cross-piece, which can be fixed to the back of the stand, in the position shown at F, with three screws, will keep the stand upright when in use.

The sizes given in the diagrams are for a stand to hold a full-size cycle—one with 26 inch wheels. One for a girl’s cycle can be made by simply reducing the given measurements according to the size of the front wheel. Give the finished stand a coat of creosote.

The Hut Carpenter.
