Never in the whole history of grassland science was the establishment and maintenance of first-class grassland of more vital importance than it is at the present time. The production of a high yield, the maintenance of a continuous supply of short protein-rich succulent, palatable herbage for grazing, and the extra growth of such material for conversion into grass meal or dried grass are aims of very far-reaching importance. In an ordinary arable soil, there are certain physical characteristics very necessary if the arable crops are to reach a successful issue, and these properties are just as necessary in grassland. The main agents of importance are water supply, air and temperature along with what might be called a satisfactory sanitary state. In addition to these, it is essential to have a sufficient supply of plant food at the disposal of th* grasses and other members of the plant association. These conditions are limited to a vast extent by the nature of the turf, and it will be evident that before any treatment will have the necessary effect, it may be and usually is necessary to carry out a scheme of preliminary treatment of the grassland area.
