STAR TEAM OUTCLASSED

KAPONGA WINS 25 TO 11 BRIGHT PLAY BY THE BACKS. C. PATERSON SCORES 10 POINTS. Kaponga beat Star by 25 to 11 at Kaponga, having play in its control most of the time. Nevertheless Star exhibited many fine bursts of back play. This was excelled, however, by the Kaponga backs, who were unusually bright, especially Arnold and James. The Star forwards were no match for the hard Kaponga pack. It was 20 minutes before C. Paterson •opened the scoring. West converted, Cuff scored, and C. Paterson kicked a field goal. Before half-time Neilson scored and Simpson converted for Star. Paterson scored on resuming, and P. Murphy and James also scored tries, West converting two. Morris and Ruth-, erford scored a try each for Star near the end. There were very few penalties, and. the game was clean and open. The teams were:— Kaponga: S. Williams,' C. Paterson, Kelly, Cuff; James, Walker; Arnold; P. Murphy; H. Gardner, Benton, West, Thoumine; T. Williams, E. Gargan, Hodge. Star: Simpson; Neilson, J. Kinsella, Me-’ Kay; McFarlane, Adlam; C. Kinsella; Whittaker, Signal; Morris, Willcocks, McLean; Sampson, Hammond, Rutherford. From the outset Kaponga made dangerous incursions into Star territory, and Arnold and Gardner went to near the line. From a scrum Arnold tried to force his way over, but failed. Star made gradual progress, but the ball came back with a movement in which Arnold and James were prominent. Paterson lost a try when on the line through a forward pass after a splendid back movement, in

which Walker short-punted to put thsr team into position. Arnold kept sending his men away snappily and many excellent thrusts -were made. McKay* J. Kinsella, McFarlane and Adlam were' prominent in counter-attacks. Paterson and James burst away, Neilson. intercepting, but a good recovery was made and Paterson scored. West converted. Almost immediately Cuff scored after a fine piece of passing in which James was a bright figure, other backs also assisting well. Paterson’s kick missed. < ~ , ■ - ~

McLean, Adlam, McFarlane and J. Kin-' selal went to ."the attack, the three last combining in snappy.passing. runs,.; and Star "threatened Kaponga’s line,” but- tb’oi defence held. Kaponga attacked, and Arnold and Kelly made a bright effort, but the. latter over-ran the ball. Benton left the field with an eye injury, and Free took his place. The Star forwards made brisk foot attacks until stemmed by James, and neither the backs nor the forwards of the Star team could' ' gain ascendancy until Neilson snapped up the ball in the opetl' and scored after a fast sprint. He placed' the ball behind the posts, and Simpson found no difficulty in goaling. Star was now in the ascendant, and J. Kinsella nearly scored. Kelly and Cuff got going, but the ball was taken from them by J. Kinsella, who ran round behind the line. Instead of reaching touch the ball found its way right.into the hands of Paterson, who kicked a splendid field goal. Kaponga opened the second spell with a hot forward attack, but Free lost the ball. Walker sent. James away from, a scrum on the line, but an infringement ruined the movement. Paterson finally scored from a scrum. West kicked a magnificent goal from the side-line. H. Gardner and the other forwards made an attack to enable P. Murphy to race in and score at the corner. West made a good attempt to repeat his previous kick, but the ball narrowly missed. After clever exchanging by Gargan, Walker and James, the last-named scored and West .converted from an easy position. Star made an attack and gave Morris a try, but Simpson’s kick failed. Just before time Rutherford got a try from the ruck, but McLean failed to goal. ■ Kaponga ....- 25 . Star .'. 11 Mr. R. Bowman refereed.
