HAWERA GALLOPING

PANLOFFS GOOD EXHIBITION. WAITAUNAHA’S POINT-TO-POINT. ————— (By “Limited.”) Conditions were very heavy on the ' outside of the course proper, which was , used by engaged horses and rising two-year-olds, on Saturday morning at the Hawera racecourse, the pegs being out 30 feet. Carfex (Hawke’s) and Golden Hair ; (Monkley) galloped half a mile in 54 ’ 3-ss. Carfex finished half a length in ’ front of Golden Hair, who was hampered by the heavy state of the ground. . Arouse (Flower) was given ft work out. over six furlongs. He went well over , the first portion but slowed up over the final stages. The youngster Votium (Cole) stretched Jiimself out well over two furlongs with- ; out being bustled’. Going from the straight six: furlongs, Bantry (Flower) and the Colossus-Just So filly (O’Con'nell) sprinted two furlongs in 28s. The youngster started smartly but Bantry had her measure at the end of the quarter. A number of intending candidates for the hunt meeting at New Plymouth were , given solid pace work on the sand track/ among them being Bay Sand, St. Clara, Ruri, Lowenberg, Topthom and Gold Gleam. Lady Eka, Kia Ora, Feisen and Link Divine were also given useful pace , work and several yearlings were exercised inside. The Cynic gelding Royal . Dispute (Dombroski) and The Tiger’s half brother Red Panther (Mills) were given their first trip from the barrier, accompanied by Corowa (Cook), all three getting away promptly. Soloist (Conway) did a round alone over the schooling hurdles, rapping two. Otherwise he gave a good -exhibition. Soloist is making good progress and-looks a likely prospect for a hurdle race.. By Hunting Song from the Lucullus maie Lucella, he is rising seven years and providing he remains sound should do useful service under J. Fryer’s guidance. Mr. W. 0. Williams’ pair of hunters Panloff (Grindlay) and Just Off (Conway)—also under Fryer’s care—went together over a round. They set a faster pace than Soloist, both jumping well until the fourth obstacle when Just Off slipped and fell on landing, giving Conway a good shaking but luckily nothing worse. Panloff gave the better exhibition, showing pace and smartness in getting away after jumping. The bitumenised roads leading to the racecourse are often a danger to highly strung racehorses. During the week-end a young horse slipped and fell giving Chote a severe fall and injuring a leg that necessitated medical attention. Arouse leaves by train to-morrow morning to take .part at the Rangitikei Hunt meeting ‘to be held at Marton on Wednesday. Old Waitaunaha, formerly trained at Hawera, was not long in scoring a win for his new owner. Waitaunaha had been working particularly well on the Hawera tracks prior to the May meeting but his old ailment coming against him his owner Mr. B. Le Pouple disposed of him to Mr. Perry a hunting enthusiast of the Manawatu Hunt Club. Waitaunaha won the Manawatu, Hunt Club’s point-to-point steeplechase at Ashhurst last Wednesday. The runners were Petrarch, Cometra, Royston and Waitaunaha, each carrying 11.0. Waitaunaha led early but the quartette were bunched over the first four fences. Petrarch ran off at the first of the brush double, Cometra takingthe lead after a round was covered. Going to post and rails her attention was distracted by a dog and she hit badly, unseating her rider. This left Waitaunsha with a commanding lend from Royston with Petrarch a long way back though making up ground. Waitaunaha went on to win comfortably by six lengths from Royston with Petrarch four , lengths further back.
