LOWER GRADE RUGBY

TUKAPA CLUB’S' SUCCESS WINS IN SEVERAL DIVISIONS. W AREA’S DEFEAT OF RAHOTU. Divisional winners of North Taranaki lower grade football competitions were found in practically all grades as the result of Saturday’s matches. In the coastal division, Rahotu was in the position of having only to defeat Warea for the championship. It failed, and thr-e teams are now level. For the second time this season Old Boys’ first junior drew with High School in an in-and-out game at the Park. The team is now two points ahead of Tukapa and has only to draw with Turangi next Saturday for the premiership in the northern division. In the northern third grade Tukapa B defeated Tukapa A, placing itself in an impregnable position. Tukapa’s victory over Star in the fourth grade also assured the club of victory, but in the fifth, the Tukapa team failed against School A, which has now won the title. Keen interest - ntred in the WareaRahotu coastal division match and Warea’s winning of the toss played a prominent part in its victory. A strong wind blew straight down the field, and Warea scored eight points from a try by V. Muir, converted by Hunt, and a penalty goal kicked, by Hunt, before the end of the spell. On two other occasions it went across, only to be recalled for infringements. In the second spell, Brophy kicked penalty for Rahotu. Warea forwards held the advantage throughout and attacks by the dangerous Rahotu backs were quickly smothered. Mr. S. Roebuck refereed. The result places Warea, Rahotu and Okato level with 12 points each. In the High School-Old Boys’ match, play was hard but not brilliant. There was no score until the second spell, when Johns kicked a splendid goal for Old Boys, which was followed by a good try in the corner to Bloxam, and a penalty to Broughton for School. Old Boys equalised the score just before time with a try by South.. The Tukapa A and B third grade match was a dour struggle, in which the B’s generally had the best of things. Malone scored a good try for the B’s, while Spedding kicked a penalty. Sullivan scored for the A's. Failure by Tukapa against High School A in the fifth grade to open up the play when playing with a second spell wind advantage probably meant ' School’s clear-cut victory. Both teams played better against the wind than with it, but by opening up play in the second spell Tukapa would probably have done more damage. Marsden and Darney scored

tries for High School and Marsden kicked a fine field goal. Pillette kicked a penalty goal for Tukapa. Outstanding players were Moorhead, Marsden, Falk and Couchman for High School, and Pillette, Turnbull and Gayton for Tukapa, Details are:— NORTH TARANAKI. Junior. High School 6, Old Boys 6.
