ENTERTAINING GATHERING. HAWERA MEMBERS’ NIGHT. The July korero of the Hawera Savage Club, held on Wednesday night, was as interesting and entertaining as the previous koreros of the season. With much pomp and circumstance Rangatira Claude Harrison installed Savage D. C. Ryan as chief savage for the evening. An address on television, illustrated with diagrams, was given by Tohunga W. W. Davy, and Mr. T. Lay showed his film of the trip to the Melbourne Scouts’ jamboree. Savage R. Swan played cornet solos and Mr. G. Gibson sang. Savage W. Canning gave an elocutionary item Two new members were initiated. Visitors were present from the Wanganui hapu. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. A. G. Challis, first assistant at the Kaupokonui main factory, will leave shortly to take up a position in a South Island cheese factory. GENERAL ITEMS. 500 and Bridge Evening. There was a good attendance, including several members of the teaching staff, at the monthly 500 and bridge evening of the Hawera Technical High School Parents’ Association at the school on Wednesday. The 500 was won by Mesdames A. E. Death, C. Dahl, W. Crompton and Mr. W. Crompton, and the bridge by Mesdames Dymond and Hodder and Mr. Hodder. Mr. F. H. Bernard was in charge of the 500 and Mr. W. P. McAnerin of the bridge. Supper was served by a committee of women convened by Mrs. W. Marshall. A social evening will be held at the end of this month. Competitions Prize. To encourage the younger competitors in class 14 of the forthcoming Hawera competitions, vocal solo, girl under 10 years, own selection, a special prize has been donated by local enthusiasts to the competitor under 8 years of age gaining highest marks in this class. Juvenile Drama Section. The addition of a juvenile section to the South Taranaki area drama festival programme has been decided on by the executive committee of the area. The section, it was stated, would be limited to players under 17 years of age, and it would be compulsory to produce juvenile plays. A large number of plays were being rehearsed with a view to presentation at the festival. Theft Charges. Charged with thefts at Hawera on February 18 and 27, 1935, of two bicycles and two lamps, the properties of Jack Beamish and Herbert H. Pettett, Roderick Donald Richard Emmett, aged 20, labourer, appeared before Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., in the Hawera Police Court yesterday and was remanded until to-day. No bail was granted. Beam- ; ish’s cycle and lamp, allegedly stolen on February 18, were collectively valued at £4, and Pettitt’s at £3.
