MOTORISTS COMPLAIN

EGLINTON VALLEY ROAD FORCING ON TO HIGHWAYS BOARD DECLARATION OF UNFORMED PART. “ONE OF MOST SERIOUS THINGS.” By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. Members of the general council of the Automobile Association to-night protested strongly against the Main Highways Board being compelled to take over an unformed scenic road in Eglinton Valley to reach Milford Sound. “I think this is one of the most serious things the motorists have ever had to face,” said the chairman, Mr. W. R. Carey. “This road is a national road and not a motorists’ road. Yet is has been put on to the Highways Board by an authority which says you have got to take it.”

“It is the same old story,” said Mr._F. W. Freeman. “The Government is going to see that the motorist pays.” Efforts had been made, said Mr. Carey, to put the cost of past construction on to the board, but they had been resisted. The board was willing to take over the 47 miles already formed, but because of the action of “this authority” the unformed part had been declared a ( highway.

It was agreed that motorists ought to protest strongly and that the first step should be to have the matter discussed by the North and South Island Motor Unions.
