DIFFERING PAYMENT
COUNTRY RELIEF WORKERS. RESOLUTION AT WHANGAREI. By Telegraph—Press Association. Whangarei, July 18. A public meeting convened by the Whangarei Unemployed Workers’ Association in the Town Hall last night unanimously carried the following resolution: “That this meeting of citizens vigorously protests against the injustice of paying unemployed in this district a lower rate than those in large towns, and points out to the Minister that, the more attractive conditions in the cities are having a serious effect on the balance of population in the country centres.” . • j The chairman of the association declared that the association would hold meetings weekly if necessary until its demands were met The deputy-Mayor, who presided, gave an assurance of the continued support of the Borough Council, and a similar promise was given by the Chamber of Commerce, which is taking the matter up with the Minister. The Rev. Steele (Anglican) and Father Herring vigorously espoused the men’s cause.
