Home for Schoolmistress. The difficulties of a back country schoolmistress were mentioned by Cr. P. R. Brown at the meeting of .the Eltham County Council on Saturday. He said that in order to secure accommodation the teacher had taken quarters in a dilapidated roadman’s whare, but the chimney smoked so badly that it was impossible to cook. He asked if the council would authorise repairs to the chimney, and it was agreed to go into the matter. Record Ski-ing Crowd for Year. In glorious weather the largest crowd that has visited the Stratford mountain house this year spent a day on the skiing grounds above Manganui Hut yesterday. There were more than 60 people at the hut, including members of all clubs in Taranaki. A party of 35 members of the Stratford and Eltham Mountain Clubs came from Stratford. Ski-ing conditions were ideal and the skiers were able to use the whole length of the ridge. The snow became icy after about 2.30 pm. when the sun went off it, but it was still satisfactory for running and enthusiasts were ski-ing till dark last night. Newspaper Director Leaves. Tributes to his considerate treatment of employees and regret at the severance of their associations wfith him were expressed to Mr. R. L. Ferris, managing director of the Egmont Newspaper Company, Stratford when he was tendered a farewell on Saturday by members of the staff. Mr. Ferris intends to go to Wellington soon, and in replying to speakers representing the different branches of employees he remarked that the Stratford Evening Post would continue to publish under the control of the Taranaki Publishing Company. On behalf of the staff Mr. J. Middlestone, who has been with the Post for eleven years, gave a travelling rug and silver cigarette case to Mr. Ferris.
