EXPANSION OF TRADE

NEED RATHER THAN RESTRICTION. AUSTRALIAN-CANADIAN TREATY. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Ottawa, July 11. “Trade expansion rather than restriction of production is the present need if any substantial recovery from the. world depression is to come about,” said Mr. J. *A. Lyons, Prime Minister of Australia, who discussed trade with Canada with the Prime Minister, Mr. R. B. Bennett, to-day. “I believe the world can consume much more of the right kind of food than it now consumes,” Mr. Lyons said. “When Providence has given us an abundance of food it is wrong to cut across the ends of God and deprive the people of foods which are essential to health and happiness.”

The Australians, he added, did not hope for an even balance of trade with Canada because of the special circumstances, but they would like to see Canadian exports and imports come closer together. A new trade agreement with Canada embodying additional features was desired by Australia. Mr. Lyons declined to give details of the negotiations, which are to be pursued at further conferences. The Empire agreements of 1932 had brought increased trade, he said, and was anxious for further increase, which he believed a revision of the present treaty in the light of experience would accomplish. ■. He made no Imperial defence commitments at London, he remarked. VISIT TO NIAGARA FALLS. PARTY LEAVES FOR VANCOUVER. Rec. 7 p.m. Toronto, July 13. Mr. J. A. Lyons and his party left for Vancouver by train after a busy 36 hours spent in visiting the Niagara Falls and the Welland Canal on the way to the falls, where they were the guests of Mr. T. B. McQuestin, Ontario Minister of Highways and Public Works, who showed theni points of interest. They viewed the Falls both in daylight and when illuminated at night. The party inspected the Niagara hydroelectric power development scheme. At the Welland Canal Mr. Lyons mounted to the control room and operated the lock machinery, bringing a freighter through.
