HAWERA’S FORM RETURNS

GAME OF SPLENDID FOOTBALL. MANAIA BEATEN BY 8 GOALS. Hawera displayed a remarkable return to form when it met Manaia in the first match for the Duff Cup, winning by eight goals to nil. Splendid football was witnessed throughout the game, which was fairly even. Only deadly tackling and sure kicking by the Hawera backs robbed Manaia of many chances. The Hawera goalie was never seriously tested. The teams were: —

Hawera: Lobban; Longstaff, Cockerill; Barker, Starling, Griffin; James, Thompson, Corkindale, Frampton, Ogden. Manaia: C. Austin; J. Williamson, J. Mouatt; E. Austin, G. Arbuckle, F. Freakley; J. Skinner, W. Williamson, D. Williamson, R. Muggeridge, J. Philip. Hawera kicked off against a slight breeze and immediately took up the attack, Corkindale sending to Thompson, who sent James away on the wing, but his centre was cleared by J. Mouatt to Arbuckle, who transferred to D. Williamson. COckerill came across to rob him and clear down the centre, Arbuckle received but lost to Starling, who sent on to Corkindale who, after drawing the defence, sent to Ogden, who kicked behind. E. Austin received from the kick and sent on to Skinner, but Barker robbed him, transferring to James, who centred, but the inside forwards failed to accept the opportunity. J. Williamson kicked downfield for Skinner to gain possession but Longstaff intercepted and his pass was received by Corkindale, who gave James an opportunity to beat C. Austin. Frampton beat W. Williamson in a battle for the ball and sent through to Corkindale. The latter was beaten by J. Williamson, who cleared to R. Muggeridge only 'to see him lose possession to Starling, who transferred' for James to score another good goal."' Play was now very even but Hawera was superior with the finishing touches. D. Williamson kicked to R. Muggeridge. who sent out to Philip. The latter lost to Cockerill, who sent on to Ogden. He cut in and touched to Thompson, who shot behind. D. Williamson received from the kick and the Manaia front line set up a determined attack. The Hawera backs were magnificent, Longstaff eventually clearing to Starling, who transferred to Corkindale. The latter manoeuvred around and shot past C. Austin, who was unsighted through his own backs. D. Williamson kicked off to Muggeridge, who sent across to Skinner only to see Barker clear' to James, whose .centre was well cleared by Mouatt. Starling received and transferred to Ogden, but the half-time whistle pulled him up. Hawera opened sensationally in the second spell. Manaia kicked off, Frampton intercepting and passing to Corkin-

dale, who' transferred for James to score his third goal. From Manaia’s kick-off Longstaff robbed D. Williamson and passed to'Starling, who scored with a long dropping shot. Hawera forwards were now working like a machine. Starling obtained and from -his pass to Corkindale the ball travelled to Ogden, on to Thompson, back to Corkindale and across to James, whose shot narrowly missed. The kick ■went to Arbuckle, who sent out to Skinner. Longstaff robbed him and, after a 50'yards run, beating two opponents, he sent in a rising shot over the bar. Manaia came again, J. Williamson passing to Muggeridge, on to Philip and in to D. Williamson, but Longstaff cleared with a good kick to Corkindale, who beat two opponents to add another to the total. • « Manaia pressed hard from the kick-off, Philip obtaining to beat Griffin, only to lose to Cockerill, who sent upfield. Muggeridge obtained possession and sent D. Williamson away for a 30-yard run. Only the goalie was left to beat but Longstaff doubled back fast to overtake him and send for a corner which Cockerill cleared. Manaia pressed again and Hawera conceded another corner, Cockerill sending behind. W. Williamson sent in a good one only to see Hawera send it behind. The same player had another attempt, this time D. Williamson receiving. He and Longstaff fought for possession, the latter eventually slipping the ball through to Starling, who cleared down to Corkindale, who went away to score his third goal. Manaia kicked off and a determined movement fell, Barker robbing Skinner to send back to Muggeridge, who came through only to lose to Longstaff, who passed on to Starling. The latter sent in a powerful shot which was deflected out of the goalie’s reach by J. Williamson. Manaia now put on all speed and only the defence of Cockerill, Barker and Longstaff' held them in check until the final whistle. Hawera 8 Manaia 0 Mr. A. Stevens was the referee. JUNIOR COMPETITION. WAITARA CLUB BEATS ALBION. Playing at Waitara the Albion junior team, was beaten by Waitara by two goals to nil. Both teams played good football, but Albion ■ was handicapped through being unable to field more than nine players, some of the boys having to work. The goals were scored by Hosie and Nixon. Mr. W. Reeves was referee. Albion and Waitara are leading in the junior competition with eight points each, Moturoa being next with two points. Moturoa has defaulted for the balance of the season, a regrettable action as the team showed considerable promise and would have improved greatly if it continued the remainder of the season; Both the Waitara and ■ Albion clubs are. very keen, the boys practising at every opportunity. This augers well for the code, as these boys will be next year’s senior players. MATCHES ELSEWHERE. Association football matches in other centres resulted:— Auckland.
