GENERAL AND PERSONAL ITEMS. A welcome home was tendered Mr. and Mrs. Mac. Campbell at the Okaiawa hall on Thursday night. Dancing interspersed with items passed the time happily. Songs were sung by Miss L. Mortimer and Mr. F. Tilly and humorous monologues by Mrs. C. McCullum. _ The accompanists were Miss V. Mortimer and Miss E. Williams. Music for the dance was played by Miss M. Guy.. Mr, D. Shearer was master of ceremonies. Mr. and Mrs. A. Guy have returned from New Plymouth. Mr. Gedge, Puniwhakau, has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Oldfield. Miss D. Jennings is the guest of the Misses Crosbie. Mrs. Hollis, Mrs. W. Johnston and Mrs. Evetts were visitors to Fraser Road recently. Messrs. H. Feather and E. Oldfield are the guests of Mr. Gedge, Puniwhakau. Mr. H. Dickinson has been visiting Okaiawa. PERSONAL ITEMS. Miss Bertha Werder and Mr. John Werder, Waitoa, have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. O. Steiner, Kapuni. GENERAL ITEMS. Ping-Pong at Patea. The Aramoho Ping-Pong Club visited Patea for a friendly match and defeated the local team. A return match will be played at Aramoho next week. Collision at Okaiawa. At the cross-roads in the Okaiawa township a collision occurred on Thursday between a lorry and a two-seater car, fortunately without any .consequences. The car was proceeding up Ahaiapaipa Road when it struck a large ■lorry coming from the direction of Normanby. The force of the impact swung the car round at right angles to its original position till it was facing the same way as the lorry. Schoolmistress Addresses Rotary. Miss V. Shieb, of the Ohangai School, who recently toured the United Kingdom and the Continent, was the speaker at yesterday’s luncheon gathering of the Hawera Rotary Club. She gave an interesting address on conditions in Germany. Opunake Guild Card Party. A euchre party in aid of the Opunake Anglican Ladies’ Guild funds was held in the parish hall on Thursday evening. Mesdames C. Maindonald and Day were the organisers and the prizes were won by Mrs. Northcote and Mr. H. Urbahn. Heating Early Morning Train. The president, Mr. E. K. Cameron, reported to last night’s meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce that, following representations in regard to the heating of the carriage on the Strat-ford-Hawera link with the AucklandNew Plymouth express, the Railway Department decided to heat the carriage, placing it next to the engine. Return to Flat Rate Wanted. Criticism of the Government’s decision not to return to the flat rate system for telegraph charges was made by members of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce last night, when a letter from the Postmaster-General through the Associated Chambers pointed out that the volume of traffic had increased by .52 per cent, and the revenue by 2.1 per cent since the introduction of the new system. It was decided to urge for a return to the flat rate. It was contended that, as business conditions had greatly improved, if the flat rate system had been in operation the increases would have been a good deal greater than the almost negligible amount stated. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. From 1.30 p.m. to-day till the beginning of the jubilee reunion celebrations at 2 o’clock, pupils of the Hawera Main School will give demonstrations of folk dancing for the entertainment of expupils. The Hawera Technical High School Band will also be in attendance. The Tainui and Ruanui Maori footballers will play a match at Normanby on Wednesday next commencing at 2.30 p.m. 'There will be a dance at night. A meeting of all interested in the pig industry, under the auspices of the South Taranaki branch o’ the breeders’ association, will be held in the Egmont A. and P. Buildings, Nelson Street, Hawera, on Thursday, July 18, at 11 a.m. Smith and Trim Ltd. advertise particulars of their sales at Hawera to-day of dessert and cooking apples and citrus fruits, hedge and shelter plants, cabbages and cauliflower plants at 11 a.m., and poultry, including turkeys and geese, furniture and a small consignment of general drapery at. 1.30 p.m. The first annual ball of the * Manaia Municipal Band will be held in the town hall, Manaia, on July 24. Particulars are advertised. A carnival dance will be held in the Okaiawa town hall on July 22. Music will be played by Hooker’s Merrymakers dance band. Particulars are advertised. “BABY TAKE A BOW.” SHIRLEY TEMPLE SHOW. In “Stand Up and Cheer” Shirley Temple, five-year-old wonder child of Hollywood, won international fame for an amazing portrayal. • In “Baby, Take a Bow,” which will begin a two-day season at the Hawera Opera House to-day, Shirley again gives a remarkable performance, approaching genius, and the picture is full of gloriously comic situations. James Dunn and Claire Trevor, who have appeared in three shows, play the roles of Shirley’s parents. GRAND THEATRE'S OFFERING. Two exciting pictures, “The Silver Streak,” in which one of the latest Diesel-engined, streamlined railway expresses will be shown, and “The Woman in Red,” starring the lovely Barbara Stanwyck, will be shown at the Grand Theatre, Haweia, to-day and Monday. The cast of the former show, a thrilling tale of adventure on the rails, includes Ray Starrett, Irving Pichel, William Farnum, Sally Blane and Doris Dawson. Barbara Stanwyck’s picture features a glamorous romance, replete with thrills.
