PATEA COURT SITTING
JUDGMENTS IN CIVIL CLAIMS. Judgment by default was given in the' following cases in the Patea Magistrate’s Court on Thursday by Mr. J.- H. Salmon, S.M.: W. T. Simmons v. R. "Walker, £1 14s 6d; Patea County Council v. L. C. Goodson, £7o' 4s lid. R. Wigmore was ordered to pay Messrs, R. A. Adams and Sons Ltd.' £8 Bs' 6d, ini default eight days’ imprisonment; R. -M. Willis was ordered to pay Ellis Bros. £4 7s 6d forthwith, in default four days’ imprisonment.' Failure to keep a wages book in accordance with the Shops and Offices Act and failure to pay the emergency unemployment charge prescribed by the Unemployment Act resulted in the appearance of. a Patea shopkeeper, who pleaded guilty on both counts. Inspector Collins, Labour Department, said a heavy penalty was not sought, but the case was brought as a warning ,to others. The defendant said there was no intention of evading payments, failure to purchase the stamps being an omission. The employee concerned .was employed more as a domestic, :only occasionally > doing other work.
