ATTITUDE CHANGES
UNITED STATES INTEREST ITALO-ABYSSINIAN CRISIS EXERCISE OF INFLUENCE PRESERVATION OF PEACE By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7.15 p.m. Washington, July 11. Suddenly changing its attitude, the Administration to-day appeared to be taking an active interest in the ItaloAbyssinian crisis and to be prepared to exercise its influence to preserve peace when the Italian Ambassador, Signor Augusto Rosso, called at the State Department to discuss routine matters before making a brief visit to Italy. The Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, took the opportunity of informing him of America’s misgivings regarding the situation and urged him to try to settle the dispute through the League of Nations.
Later Mr. Hull called on M. Andre de Laboulaye, French Ambassador, and Sir Ronald Lindsay, British Ambassador, at separate conferences, requesting information regarding Press reports that their Governments were preparing for a tri-party conference with Italy, but. both declared they were without information. In some quarters to-day’s events are taken as an indication that the Government might participate in such a conference if it is invited, and that in any event it is prepared to give moral support to any moves for peace. Mr. Hull said at a Press conference th- i the United States was deeply interested in doing whatever it could to preserve peace in the world, and was closely observing the Italo-Ethiopian developments.
