DEPUTATION OF BUSINESS MEN. TOWN BOARD MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Manaia Town Board was held on Wednesday night. Those present were Messi's. L. C. .Harrison (chairman) I». A. Walters, G. R. Watts, J. A. G. Cosgrove, H. Mead, W. H. Robinson and A. J. Christie. ’ / S .

A deputation from the Manaia Businessmen’s Association consisting of Messrs. R. L. Bennett, C. Jeromson, W. Armitage and H. Hodder appealed to the board to provide better lighting in the town area, which was much needed. The deputation stated that the association considered installing community shop front lighting but was unable to carry out the scheme at present. A second deputation was heard from the association, Mr, N. D. Jones applying for free use of the board room for monthly meetings and for the supper room of the town hall for a social evening to a member of the association. . In reply to the first request the board was sympathetic in the matter and realised the necessity for improved lighting. After a discussion it was decided to write to the engineer of the South Taranaki Electric Power Board asking when the additional light poles along the main business area would be completed before the board could give a reply to the association. A letter was received from the Manaia dental clinic committee asking if the board would make a remission in the hire of the hall for a gathering in aid of clinic funds. It was decided that the full hire be charged and a- refund be made.

The secretary of the Manaia municipal fire brigade forwarded a list of equipment and plant. As soon as 'it has been inspected by the Board it will-' be put into service. A letter from the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association concerning the Egmont National Park Board was deferred for discussion at the next board meeting. It was decided to carry out tree planting oh Arbor Day in conjunction with the Manaia main school. ' The secretary of the June tournament committee wrote applying for a refund of part of the sum of £1 3s paid to the board out of the takings, stating that profits were divided between the band and school and receipts were lower

than in previous years. Owing to legal difficv.lties the request was not granted. An application from Mr. J- Barnes for a taxi driver’s license was granted. The secretary of the Manaia Hibernian and District Sports Club forwarded payment of a percentage of gate takings at the annual 10-a-side tournament.. The conductor of. the Manaia Municipal Band reported that practices, considering the inclemency of the weather, were fairly well attended. In view of the serious dahiage to buildings and the trees and property of the Waimate Domain and -town hall it was decidec* that , ixi future the board would take immediate action and place the matter in the hands of the police.
