Miss M. Washer paid a short visit, to Cambridge during the week. Miss J. Hunter entertained some young friends at two tables of bridge on Thursday night. Mrs. E. Hunter returned to Hawera on Thursday after visiting her mother. Mrs. G. H. Alexander, at “Buenos Aires," Waverley. Mrs. B. McCarthy was a visitor to Wellington during the week. Miss G. Harcourt.. Normanby, is visiting Miss Harris at Patea. Mrs. H. M. Besley returned from New Plymouth last week-end. Mrs. W. F. Buist, who Ls visiting Auckland, met with an. accident during the week, but her condition is now much improved. Miss M. Strange, was a bridge hostess on Friday evening.

Miss B. Corry, who had been Mrs. J. Fox’s guest at New Plymouth for a few days, returned on Thursday.

Miss S. Ashmore, Wanganui, was a recent visitor to Hawera.

Mrs. C. Tonks has been visiting Mrs. D. Scott, Oroua Downs, Palmerston North, during the week. * Miss C. Tonks has been visiting friends at Wellington.

Mrs. A. K. Fyson left early in the week on a short, visit to Auckland. Owing to the serious illness of her mother, Mrs. Duff, at Christchurch, Mrs, B. Metson will leave Hawera to-day for Christchurch,

Mrs. C. J. Hawken and Mrs. J. J. Pease, who have been at Wellington for a week or two, will return home at the week-end.

Mrs. G. S. Fry has returned from Auckland.

Miss Edna Pi vac was the guest of Miss Millie Hastie at Kaponga during the week.

Black- invited a. number, of young friends to a: jolly mixed party at her home on Tuesday evening to say 'good-bye to her . friend and guest for thg past three months—Miss I. Lorimer, Scotland, who left, during .the week for Australia -and the Malay States, en route to Scotland. The : hostess wore a chic goldthreaded cherry taffetas and black, tunic frock to receive her guests,, and Miss Lorimer's gown was smartly cut in black chiffon velvet, relieved with a touch of white. There were seven tables of bridge in play, players finding their partners in a new and rather fascinating ‘-‘streamer” way, the streamers radiating from a central festoon arranged by the hostess. Mr. P. McCarthy and Mrs. L. Norman won the bridge honours. Those present included Mesdames B. Shaw. (South Island), L. Norman and Misses A. Wills, R. Pease, B. Ryan, E. Buist, J. Powdrell, M. Bowls of lovely spring bulbs, and tall vases of Marguerite daisies were set about the large sitting room at Miss Ballantyne’s home, Tawhiti, on Wednesday afternoon, when her niece, Miss J. Easton, entertained a number of guests at tea in honour of Miss Phyllis Pierce, who is shortly to be married. Each of the guests brought something useful for the bride-elect, and it was a varied assortment of gifts. The guest of honour, who wore a blue coat over a deep orange silk crepe frock and a blue hat, thanked those present, particularly the hostess and her aunt,' Miss Ballantyne. Miss Easton chose a pretty model frock of moss green, with touches of lace. During the afternoon three competitions were arranged for the entertainment of the guests, Miss D. Corrigan winning- the bird competition, Miss Joyce Gould theauto signs, and Mrs. 'Franklin the stocking test.

Kitchen Dance Evening. . ’ Over 100 guests assembled in. the Rewa Lounge on Thursday evening at the ; invitation of Mrs. F. Rae and Mrs. H. Thrush, who were hostesses at a dance and card party in honour of Miss Elsie Rae, who is to be married next week. Each of the guests brought something for the kitchen. Mr. H. Thrush was master of ceremonies, and other speakers emphasising the many good qualities of the guest of honour were Messrs. S. J. Bennett and W. G. Simpson. Mr. R. Findlay returned thanks on Miss Rae’s behalf. An entertaining programme was given between the dances, Mesdames J. McCarthy (Tokaora), A. Arnold and Messrs. W. G. Simpson and J. Hall contributing

songs and Miss M- Leggett an elocutionary item. The dance music was provided by Mr. W. Barlayman. Mrs. Arnold played extras. ■ A Monte Carlo .dance was won by -Mr. and Mrs. Meads, and the euchre -prizes were won by Mrs. Shakespear and- Mr. J. Bell. ■ Miss : Rae wore al'dainty- frock of saxe blue ’Silk ’marocain; Mrs. Rae’s neatly cut frock-being fashioned in a deep blue sand--‘crepe--’-Mrs- Thrush wore a wine evening ensemble.
