WOMEN’S DIVISION

MEETINGS OF BRANCHES Attroa: The monthly meeting, at which there was a large attendance, was presided over by Mrs. C. Benton. Visitors were Mrs. E. Meuli, Mrs. A. Meuli, Mrs. J. Meuli and Mrs. Geary, Hawera, An emergency housekeeper was found for a sick member. Hostesses were Mrs. Symes and Mrs. Schwieters. Mrs. Swan, Hawera, gave a demonstration on making a wreath. Opunake: The monthly meeting was presided over by Mrs. W. L. F. Chambers. There was a good attendance. Mesdames W. H. Haggett and J. Fraser were welcomed as new members. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. Harvey,, who was hurt in an accident recently. Mesdames Sheat and Tosland reported having had an enjoyable time at the Tokaora birthday party. Miss J. Pennington reported on the girls’ education week at New Plymouth and Mrs. Chambers reported on the deputation regarding dental clinic affairs. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. J. O'Sullivan for her work for the annual dance, which had resulted in a fair profit. A sum of five shillings was voted towards a wedding gift for the Dominion secretary. Correspondence was received regarding household guides, from Dr. Doris Gordon thanking the division for its congratulations, and from a family the division had helped. Remits for the Dominion conference were discussed. It was decided to have water laid on to the tearooms at the saleyards. Mrs. Chambers demonstrated the uses of the tree tomato. Mrs. Wan had on view two combined “tidy” boxes and seats made from gelignite boxes and neatly padded and covered and fitted with casters. Mrs. Lambie exhibited a foot stool made from a 101 b fruit case, the top being covered with strips of motor tyre, padded and covered with tapestry. Four cottonreels were used for the legs. Mesdames Eustace and Tosland tied for the sockdaming competition. A demonstration of how to make a dressmaker’s model is being arranged for the next meeting. Mesdames L. Eustace, G. Bevan and J. Fraser were the hostesses.

Purangi: Mrs. Watkins presided at the monthly meeting. Competitions were won as follow; Best worked apron: Mrs. George 1, Mrs. V. Mounsey 2. Best three pikelets: Mrs, J. S. Fletcher 1, Mrs. A. V. Webb 2. The competition for the worked apron drew large entries, some very good work being displayed. The roll call was entitled “Uses of a Lemon.” Miss S. Mounsey, who represented the branch at the Women’s Division’s education week at New Plymouth, gave an instructive description of her experiences. Members decided to hold their first birthday party on August 1, an orchestra being engaged for a dance at night.
