MUSIC AT HAWERA CLUB

SUCCESS OF JULY GATHERING. Gay with berries, japonica and bright foliage, the large reception room made a cosy setting for the Women’s Club music circle’s July musicale, and the attendance was good considering the adverse weather. The concert was arranged by Mrs. A. J. Corrigan, and presented a splendid evening’s entertainment. The circle convener, Miss Constance Reilly, who was hostess, wore a floral crepe fleurita frock with pleated finishings and lame brocaded coatee, and Mrs. Corrigan chose a dark brown lace and georgette evening ensemble. The programme was opened by an instrumental trio, violin, ’cello and piano (Mesdames Anderson, R. A. Graham and A. J. Corrigan), “Novelletten,” by Garde; songs, “My Heart is Like a Singing Bird” and “The Wind,” by Mrs. W. H. Snowsill followed. A talk on the life of Florence Nightingale was, given by Mrs. B. C. Bennett, after which Mrs. Bennett with Miss Doris Bryant read an extract from Reginald Berkeley’s play “The Lady With the Lamp.” The remainder of the programme was: Pianoforte solos, “Sequidillas” and “Refrain de Berceau,” Mrs. P. O. Veale; vocal solos, “Vissi d’Arte,” from “La Tosca,” and “Epitaph,” Miss C. Reilly; instrumental trio by Gurlitt, Mesdames Anderson, Corrigan and Graham; lyric verse speaking, “Tarantella” and “Four Ducks on a Pond,” Miss Knight’s ladies’ choir: vocal solos, “One Fine Day,” from “Madame Butterfly,” and “That's All,” Mrs. W. H. Snowsill; violin solos, “Hungarian Dance” (Drdl.a) and “Salut d'Amour,” Mrs. Anderson; verse speaking and descriptive passages, “In the Wilderness” and “Heraclitus,” Mrs. B. C. Bennett and Miss D. Bryant; songs, “Nocturne,” “The Fairies’ Dance” and “The Funny Fellow,” by Michael Head, Miss C. Reilly. Accompaniments were played by Mesdames P. O. Veale, A. J. Corrigan and Anderson. Those present included Mesdames C. R. Paine (Pio Pio), J. Ekdahl, W. R. Shaw, W. Hamilton, Snowsill, W. G. Simpson, G. A. Burgess, Graham, W. W. Gibson, J. Houston, J. E. Campbell. S. A. Chisholm, L. A. Ablett, W. W. Thomas, N. Ashworth (Halcornbe), Bennett, Bennell, A. M. Young, J. Hobbs, T. F. McKenzie, Anderson and Misses P. Ekdahl, Buchanan (2), Bryant, E. Murdoch, M. Burgess, W. Knight and M. Crabb.
