LEAGUE CYCLE NOTES
M McCANN AND MACKIE RETURN. ACTIVITIES AT NEW PLYMOUTH. , (By-“ Wheel The road cycling season of the New Plymouth Cycling and Athletic League will commence On. July 6 with ah open road race around Inglewood fot a £5 each prize. This race, which is now the annual opening event is open to any rider, entries being due now. ' The season promises to be an interesting. one on account of the presence of Sid McCann and Angus Mackie. McCann’s records are well known to Taranaki enthusiasts and all are keen to see him rpgain his NeW Zealand championship fformWsof five or six years ago. McGann’has not ridden for about four years, but as he commenced his cycling carder 10 years ago as a boy of 16 years, he should still have many successful years ahead of him. Angus Mackie, who has been in the South Island for about 12 months, is again living at New Plymouth. When in form he is among New Zealand’s best all-touhd cyclists. He has a wonderful finishing sprint in road events and there should be some interesting finishes when he is matched with McCann, Snowden, Burkb, Ashman and company. In club events H. Snowden showed great improvement last season finishing up a particularly solid rider. He was very unlucky in the big road race, but it is to be hoped he has better luck this season.' He has already commenced early training. “Wheel” hopes Sid McCann can come back to his best, as he. and Snowden should prove an ideal working pair over a hard course. Lynn Wood should show good early form this season. The winner of the 1934 mountain race is sure to be a creditable addition to the back-markers. Tire Stevens brothers have commenced training. Probably Gordon may show the better early form, but after his great mountain race ride last year, when he gained second fastest time from scratch, he will probably find his way on to the scratch mark before the season advances far. Jack Foote is now living at Wellington where he gained first and fastest time from scratcff in a road race last week, collecting a £5 10s cash prize. The New Plymouth club intends to send two cyclists to the Christchurch race on October *5. Last year £5 was allotted for this purpose, but possibly the club will do better this year. Last season the club’s two best riders, Snowden and Burke, were selected, but this year the selectors will endeavour to select the best and a middle marker with good prospects, thus giving the out-markers a fair chance of a trip. Percy Dunn is commencing training again after returning from a seven weeks’ holiday in Australia. Percy was an improving B-grade rider last year. .He is the type that improves slowly and surely. He could become a grektly improved cyclist with serious training. The programme committee will arrange the road season programme in the near future. The sum of £1 cash is to l>e added to the A grade sweepstakes and 10s to the B grade events. The usual series will be arranged, and the riders will be graded. A programme of races will' be arranged soon after the opening event.
