SPEED IMPROVING

NEW PLYMOUTH HARRIER CLUB. GOOD TIME BY FASTER MEN. Westown was the scene of the New Plymouth Harrier Club’s weekly run on Saturday afternoon. This country, which is just about the most suitable in the district for pack running, always draws a good muster, and the attendance this week, if not tire best for this ruh, was well up to the average. Twenty-four runners turned out. The . run, as on the previous Saturday, was made in two packs. The slower pack, and also the larger one, was under' the control of the club captain, H. S. Kingston, and the fast pack was under the control of the vice-captain, -R. J. Stewart. The fast pack did not-run with pacemakers but nevertheless kept well together and made very good speed until it caught the other pack. 'The pacemakers for the slow pack were H. R. Dingle and R. J. Boucher. # The course followed from the Westown school was in a southerly direction across. country to Barreto’s Lagoon. The pacemakers then led back across. country to Tukapa Street, near the nurseries.' From there a run in. was made back to the School. The distance of the run is from six to seven miles.

A noticeable feature of the runs is that they are being made now at a much faster pace and rests do not seem to be so frequent. 'On Saturday the fast, pack, which consisted of eight of the club’s better runners, ran at a very fast pace, and if all the runners who formed this pack on Saturday hold their present form the club will hold a very fair chance in the teams event at Wanganui on Saturday week. Next Saturday the Taranaki crosscountry championship will be run over a Gf-mile course from the racecourse. The race will start at 2.30.' The following week the club will send two teams to Wanganui for the West Coast (N. 1. Championship race.
